I have been looking at a horse as a happy hack/ sponsored rides etc with a previous injury and was wondering if anyone had any experience of anything similar..
The horse has sustained a serious hoof crack (18months) from top to bottom (front outside of hoof), has had remedial farriery now growing out and horse is in normal shoes and is totally sound in walk and canter.
Two farriers have confirmed horse is fine to ride and jump small fences but avoid jumping big as horse has obviously a weakness there now. Horse is 8.
The horse has 'an odd action in trot' and it is stiff sometimes if left in the box for longer than overnight until worked in. Horse is on Cortaflex and has made an improvement in general happiness/ more forward going. Begs the question is it 'odd action/ his way of going' or is the horse in pain and lame. .
Decided to have vet out to do full investigation into it but can't come until next week so wondered if anyone has experience of the above and any possible prognosis/ opinions much apreciated. Vet has suggested nerve block to locate source of problem if horse is actually lame..

That doesnt sound like lameness from a cracked hoof is all I can say. Also, if the horse fails the lamness check, its really not your place to have to pay for nerve blocks.

Unless this horse is dirt cheep, maintainable and you understand that at some point in near future you may have to have horse PTS and are prepared to take that decision then I would be steering well clear.

I looked at a sweet mare with cracks in both front feet. I had my vet out to look at her. They were only just beginning to grow out, but the vet wasn't convinced that in the future I wouldn't have issues and said she could never pass her and confirmed the question in my mind, which was as much as she was sweet, was it worth buying a known potential problem?

As Nailed hun. There's something else going on there that is a lot more than a cracked hoof. If you've got a bottomless bank account, are prepared for maybe huge vet bills and a horse that you can't ride....................................................

Thank you all! In a round about way thats what I was getting at. The hoof crack isn't the route of the problem clearly by the sound of it.. Will see what the vet has to say. There is no heat or swelling anywhere at all so its a mystery what could be the cause of it? Its a toughie cause he seems very happy in himself...

My mare slit her coronet band in the field which resulted in a pernament deformity and hoof crack going straight down the front of a back hoof. At first it needed remedial shoeing, and whilst the crack was wide needed a plate across it to support it. We also had a period where she was prone to fungal infections in that foot.

That been said, once the initial injury and damage had grown out, though the crack was still there, we never had a problem regarding it in the three years between that accident and the time she was PTS (different problem). So the hoof crack on its own would not concern me much.

However, this sounds like there is something else going on, not related to the crack. Personally I would steer clear!
