Lameness question

I've got a 9y/o TB on loan wvtb and he's been with me less than a month and gone lame twice already. Once due to pulling a shoe in the field (was fine once he had it put back on) and he's gone lame today.

He has flat feet and currently only front shoes on. A lot of the tracks at my yard are stony and really made him lame when he pulled a shoe (literally hopped).

I honesty can't think why he's lame now. There's no swelling that suggests a kick, no cuts. He's been out 24/7 for 2/3 weeks now coming in for a few hours each day. Someone at yard said he looks uncomfortable on both fronts so suggested possible lami however when trotted it was only near fore. YO said he dipped a hind but not sure if that was because he was on cobbles at the time.

He is the sweetest 'person' ever, brilliant to hack and a gentle giant everyone loves him. However I don't want to take a horse with lameness issues... I know it's still early days but I dunno what to do.

Just looking for some advice really. He's in tonight with hay. Currently feed him a handful of happy hoof and biotin as his feet aren't the best, and he's overweight so don't want to feed anything hi cal.

Bit down in the dumps about it as I love him to pieces but don't want to start spending loads of money on a horse I don't own.

Aaahhh sorry I just don't really know where to go from here, will see how he is tomorrow but I'm just worrying that this will be a recurring issue :(

Is it the same hoof as he pulled the shoe? If so it could be bruising coming out.

As he is over weight lami can't be ruled out, I've known a tb who got it, and they can only get it in one hoof.

I've had my tb for 3 & half years.. Sometimes with tb's they are a little bit woosy! I've obviously had my boy long enough to know him now.. But I've known him to play over the fence with a pony, knock his knee on the fence & be lame for 10 days from bruising (no swelling, no heat).. I've also known him to skid in the field & be dodgy for a couple of weeks. So with these lovely non hardy horses sometimes its not as bad as it seems. Hope it's all ok for you. Is he lame in the field? .

He didn't come in from the field lame, but the ground is stony so I suppose it's possible he's caught a bigger one and it's hurt his foot, he is mardy bum on the stones!

Thanks ginger bear that reassures me a bit :) I'm hoping its not lami I'm panicking so much and he's not even mine! I was crying when he was lame from pulling a shoe!

Maybe I'm the mardy bum

As you get to know him you'll begin to know when he's really injured & when he's done 'something' but its not that bad, just one of them things. Welcome to the world of tb's! Your farrier will be able to give you an idea of whether its laminitus.
I used to get myself in a right stress every time he did something & feel like any time soon it was going to be the end of him. He fell over in a trailer on the way to a x country sponsored ride. He was galloping round the field one time & pulled a muscle & was stiff as a board.. Then the thing I mentioned about bashing his knee. He's not really accident prone & he isn't lame that often nowadays.. But when he is obviously as long as it isn't something major, I chuck him in the field and give him the time he needs..

Also just to add if he is lwvtb you are in the position where you have the choice whether you want to take a horse on like this, unfortunately if your anything like me, I will always give a dodgy one a chance coz I think I can fix anything & give them a better life!! Lol..

Update on the big ginger :)

Had the vet on monday, he's lame on his off fore and his sole is pretty bruised quite close to the frog. Guessing he's stood on a big ouchy stone (we are quite stony unfortunately :( ) so he's got bute for a few days to make him more comfortable, and no field time until he's better.

Thinking for the future - as mentioned he is flat footed and hes gotten the bruise even with front shoes on. Theyve not been on long (2/3 weeks) so im just pondering possible routes to go down with him.

Does anyone rate hoof boots? I've bought some biotin for him and am getting a new farrier so will have a chat about a possible POA to help 'grow him new feet'. Any tips will be greatly appreciated :D
