Lameness

Hi. My tb mare has been mildly lame for 3 months. When it was first apparent it was just after shoeing so we took the shoe off, checked the foot and replaced the shoe. I gave a couple of weeks rest and she was still lame. The vet came out and did an examination but couldn’t find anything. They suggested rest. Then nerve blocks, x rays etc. She has now had 3 months rest and no sign of improvement. She is booked in for nerve blocks etc next week. It is going to be costly but feel I can’t get anywhere until I know what we’re dealing with. Does anyone have any advice on this situation and how I should be treating her in the meantime? I.e should she be on box rest until we know more? She is currently turned out 24/7 unless the weather is awful. She’s happier out but I don’t want to be making her more uncomfortable. Any advice would be appreciated as not dealt with this ‘mystery’ lameness before with no visible signs of what is wrong. Thank you.

Since she is a TB then I would ask for an x ray of C6/7 where it is known that there are large numbers of TBs with a congenital malformation which is asymmetric and affects the attachment and stability of the front legs.

I would keep her turned out, sadly she needs to be lame enough for the vet to identify the cause.

Thank you. That is something I will ask about. And yes, best not to change anything that will affect the lameness I suppose. Thank you for your help.
