As most are aware my mare is in box rest due to laminitis.

My others are now on the Happy Hoof to use it up as mare is on only speedy beet .

I have heard allot of Negatives of happy hoof. Saying it can make it worse or trigger it

Which lami feed have you found is the best and why . This in turn will help others who are in this or get in this situation .

This poll is for people with laminitics and have actually gone through and out other side or people still in the Laminitis stage.

please state your experience with the said feed and whether it helped thankyou

I don't feed Happy Hoof to my laminitic pony anymore as apparently it has added molasses. I feed Hi Fi Lite but I am going to change to Hi Fi molasses free as apparently that has even less sugar than the Hi Fi Lite.

I feed Happy Hoof to my lami pony for his supplement, had no problems.
I used to feed Hi Fi Lite but he used to leave it. I understood HH has mint in to tempt fussy feeders & is Laminitis Trust approved?

I was advised to feed my 16.1hh mare Happy Hoof by the Laminitis Trust. I give her 1 scoop of Happy hoof am and pm with maganesium, she has weighed and soaked hay and is turned out for 5 hours muzzled. She has been on this diet now for over a year and looks great.

When winter comes I normally feed a small amount of speedi-beet (warm), I then reduce the amount of HH. This year I don't know whether to feed speedi-beet or fast fibre.

I feed Hifi Mol free and speedi beet she looks well on it

I've never had a confirmed lami case but I like to be carefull as she has show sugar sensitivity before

I feed a small amount of Hifi lite and a handful of healthy hooves. This is purely to get her to eat the vits and mins. Looking at molasses free one too. It has not in anyway impacted on her recovery from single mildish attack of lami.

The rest of feed (needed as she is out 12 hours with graznig muzzle, in 12 hours) is hay soaked for 12 hours mixed with oat straw.

I wouldnt cut it out completely as altho some arent keen on the alfalfa in Hifilite it does counter balance some of the deficiencies of the oat straw from a nutritional perspective without adding higher sugars.

The Healthy Hooves I only feed a handful as I am suspicious of how delicious she finds it and dont want to feed any more of it than that, despite the lami trust label.

Hi fi lite, speedi beet and formula 4Feet supplement, plus soaked hay. He has to have a bucket feed, to get him to eat the medication he is on.

I am going to have to add a little D&H Safe&Sound to get him to eat up the bucket feed, as he hates the taste of the metformin and the hi fi lite just doesn't cut it anymore, even though he is hungry.

I am finding it hard to buy oat straw in surrey - so if anyone knows a supplier please let me know.

Merryn Gets 1 scoop of happy hoof, 1 scoop of speedy beet and 1/2 a scoop of badminton high fiber nuggets Twice a day He also gets a section of Blue horsehage everyday and lives out 24/7 (there isn't much grass in his paddock). I ride him for atleast an hour everyday and keep him on the lean side. :) Infact he's lost about 100kg in the year I've had him :D

I feed: -

Hi-fi Lite (Advised by dengie still lower than molasses free)
Baileys lo-cal or Allen Page Fast Fibre

Also give magnesium supplement

Soaked hay

Dodson & Horrell Safe and Sound

Plus Global Herbs Lamin-safe-thingy-can't-remember-it's-name-but-it's-great

ps - for my little 12 hh pony. He had Lami in the spring. He's been on starvation patch all summer with his Supplement given in a tiny bit of Hi Fi Lite, but now my son's hunting him and it's winter I thought I'd best give him a wee bit more to keep the weight on.

I found mine was better when I cut out all alfalfa, even the small amounts in HiFi Lite or Happy Hoof seemed to keep him slightly footy. I now feed Dodson & Horrell Safe & Sound & Baileys Lo Cal.

CoolStance :) Scientifically safe believe it or not. Plus holds much more uses which aren't as well known such as aiding things such as dermatitis, good for tying up prone horses, cushing, etc....Ring them up or email Tim for a better insight to it. It's very interesting!!!!

My cob (in siggy) has laminitis - but neither of mine have any molasses of any sort in anay feed. They have the local farm shops equivalent of Top Spec Lite - its chopped oat straw with a little alfalfa coated in soya oil with some mint in it. Other then that they get some Fast Fibre when it gets really cold or she needs a little more weight - you can see her ribs(just!) other then that they get hay.

When she had her lami her hay was soaked - min of 30 mins and max of an hour - and weighed religiously - she had a max of 6kgs a day - she also had a scoop of 1kg of Happy Hoof and 2 pints of soaked speedibeet twice a day with a measure of Formula4Feet. This was the diet rpescribed by the Laminits Clinic and totally unmolassed chaff was impossible to find. As soon as I found it I dropped the Happy Hoof as I don't believe ANY horse needs molasses. They don't have lumps of molasses in the wild to eat and their digestive system isn't able to process it properly.

Molasses is the food of the devil for horses.:o

I use Speedibeet, but rinse it again after soaking as Speedibeet has 5% sugar and I like to get the sugar content as low as poss. Also feed soaked hay, again rinsed after soaking (we call the soak water 'hay beer'!)

I used to feed my laminits prone mare Hi Fi Lite, Fast Fibre and on the odd occasion speedibeet. Speedibeet had the effect of sending her off her head so stopped that. After years of feeding Hi Fi Lite with a good supplement and soaked hay I stopped it and found that my mare's pulses went down almost overnight. I haven't fed it since and she is now out on grass supplemented with a little horsehage and no problems at all.

I now believe that keeping it simple is the best method, I'd been lulled into buying 'laminitic feeds' when really many just need as few things as possible going in to them. If her conditions drops this winter or I feel she could do with something extra I'll probably feed a small amount of Fast Fibre.

at the moment my mare has had a set back from fri evening really hobbling don't know why foot cold apart from coronet pulse up a little nothing changed really , making me feel so low feel so helpless
she is only on speedy beet formula4feet, laminator and flexijoint pm and speedy beet and founderguard am.

I am praying to god my mare gets through this we have been together 21 1/2 years .

so the reason for the poll is H&H readers experiences.

I will ( hopefully) want the lowest feed for her .

as this was grain induced laminitis

i WILL NEVER EVER feed her grain again :(:(:(:(

i too bought a hay soaker on ebay soak it over night then rinse through and pull the plug drain it and start again
