Hi all - I took this pony on three years ago, because I felt sorry for her frankly. In her late twenties, she had a laminitic history but was kept alone, on a concrete yard, all day everyday with hay three times a day. She shuffled around - clearly uncomfortable, and looking very depressed. All in all, no life for a pony. So the owner was only too glad to pass her on as she felt the animal had been foisted on her and hence she didn't want to spend money on her ( ! )
I had her x-rayed as there was some vague suggestion of rotated pedal bones, and yes she does have slight rotation in one foot. I got her shod, got some weight off her, got her teeth done, put her out on restricted grazing and muzzled through the night, she stayed in my open yard in the day with another fattie, and although not ridden, she's walked out in hand and is up and down the hills of my fields. Actually she's had a second lease of life, literallly galloping around as though she were 5 again.
There has been no sign of lami until a few days ago and she came in distinctly footie. So since Monday she's been penned on a deep bed, bute twice a day, small amounts of hay and I've had her shoes off to see if there's any sign of abscess which there isn't.
Although she seems a little better, and there's no heat in the feet, her pulse hasn't calmed down at all and she's shifting her weight between her feet to the same extent. If I call the vet in I suspect that there's little else they can advise anyway and I just wonder if you'd agree with that? Of course, I wouldn't allow her to go on for weeks like this, but as I said this is day four of being kept in and buted. Thoughts please?
