Advice please??

My shetland looked really sore yesterday and after looking at his feet, his sole and the front of his hoof is lower than the hoof wall and his hoof wall almost looks like it is coming away from the sole...? He only saw the farrier last weekend who said his feet were fine.

Laminitis? And how can I help him please? I've bought him in and he's living in the indoor as he's claustrophobic and won't stable. Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Thanks x

First of all get the vet out asap.

He needs to be on a deep supportive surface, ideally deep shavings - can you sort this for him, maybe by having a pal next door? This is necesary to support the sole. I would strongly advise not getting shoes onto already compromised feet - for extra sole support use boots and pads so as not to cause further trauma.

Feed soaked hay - steamed is not enough neither is just rinsed. It needs to be soaked for at least half an hour (anyone who thinks 10 mins is the same needs to speak to my friends professional lamanitic about his reaction to that lol!)

If it has come out of the blue then it would be worth your while having the vet take bloods to so that you can ensure there is nothing else going on, voucher for free lab tests from here http://www.talkaboutlaminitis.co.uk/

Do you have any bute you can put him on while you wait for your vet?

Best of luck - time is of the essence, it is a serious condition.

OP You need a vet out urgently, laminitis is always an emergency.

As you have said you have him in the school, he's off the grass, that's great. Make sure he can't eat any grass through the fence etc.

Give him a properly soaked small holed hay net and your vet will give you all the other information you need as it can vary slightly.

Good luck with the vet and let us know how you get on!

Sorry but you need your vet out asap or if your farrier can get out today to have a peep.... to confirm it is laminitis which sadly it sounds as if it is....pony will need vet attention. With all this rain the grass is growing & as a result alot of laminitis.Good luck & please get somebody out today laminitis is not to be messed with.x

Vet ASAP and you will have no choice but to stable on a very deep bed. I was worried about keeping my mare in 24/7 when she got lami last year as she is a stress head when not turned out at least during the day but she coped fine and horrible as it is the pain stopped her stressing about the little things.
Don't mess around or waste time, got a vet out immediately to my mare and she was sound again within a month and able to go out for a few hours and you wouldn't think anything had happened to her now. You will also need bute/danilon and sedalin and see wether he needs X-rays.
Please get a vet out, could be the difference between saving him and loosing him laminitis is not something to mess around with.
Good luck!

ps. If pony is over weight feed 1.5% dry weight hay of body weight in 24 hours. If not feed add lib (soaked) hay.

The EPS pads might be very useful if he wont stable. What is the surface in the indoor? Sand isn't always good for support in laminitis.
Fingers crossed. x Being able to move at his own pace isn't imo a problem but the feet must be supported properly.

Thank you, have called vets and they are going to call me back to have a chat and see if they think they should see him or not. School surface is sand and rubber mix. He will not stable, he just stands and shakes and sweats even with another horse next door. I may be able to find a barn to put him in if school surface is not suitable? Thanks for all your advice. I will let you know what vets say when they call back.

When they call you back - book an appointment, don't be fobbed off.

I agree with Amymay. From what you've said about his sole, you need to tell them its an emergency & you need them out asap. Other thing is if they give him acp, its more than likely you'll get him in a box, but I agree stress can make it worse.

I would call back tbh and insist they come out to you as an emergency. With what you say about the sole this isn't something to discuss over the phone and the vet potter up when it suits. Lami really is an emergency. Don't worry about coming across as a pain, your pony is the first concern and it sounds like he really needs a vet.

If you can get deep shavings on an area of the barn then that sounds good, I would look into the pads too so you can offer him some support.

Could be lami, or white line/seedy toe/various other things. Vet as well as farrier seeing him Asap if his hoof's falling apart!

I am very lucky to have my vets moblie number so I don't have to go through the office staff if I feel I have an emergency on my hands. In fact if I ring the office (non urgent) they usually tell me to ring the vet direct.

Fingers crossed. x
