as theres alot of ponies/horse suffering this condiditon atm
wondering what have you found what help/works with your ponies suffering with this condition.and for lami/cushings

lamin tec 5HT
prolamin
any herbs
etc
which fed may/or not alongside drugs prescibed by vet

I have a cushings sufferer and previous Laminitis also, i am a firm believer in the only prevention are muzzles or strip grazing, i honestly dont believe any herbs, supplements actualyl help prevent this.

However cushings related - mine is on;

Cushylife supplement
Milk Thistle
Seaweed

and he has never looked better - bright eyes, lovely coat and energy levels appear to be back to normal if not better.

In an insulin resistant type there are supplements that are supposed to help, and as laminitis is usually a symptom of a metabolic issue then I believe supplements can be useful alongside correct management. (I don't feed all of these though!)

Magnesium - lots of ponies seem to benefit from this so I do feed mag ox routinely.
Brewers Yeast - a source of chromium which is also supposed to help with Insulin resistance.
Cinnamon - Another used to help metabolism, been used in human patients with diabetes.
Turmeric - an antioxidant and anti inflammatory.
Hawthorn - promotes circulation and anti oxidant.
Alpha lipoic acid - anti oxidant
Yea sacc - helps to stabilise the gut
Rosehips - help with hoof quality
agnus castus/chasteberry - helps pituitary function for cushingoid horses.

thanks for the replies
this is first time our pony has had lami throughout the winter
not all ponies are over weight who get lami/cushings
ours need to put on weight

its such a complex condition

i read all this posts/threads about lami/cushings/IR with interest

My mare is lami prone and her diet consists of Happy Hoof, magnesium and weighed and soaked hay. She is also muzzled during the day.

my mare has D&H Hedgerow herbs and I swear by them, she had laminitis five years ago and has been alright since, then the other week I ran out waiting for supplier to get it in and last thursday she walked out of the stable pottery as anything and has it again, she's not as bad this time thankfully but is back on the herbs again! Coincidence perhaps, but I think I'll make sure I never run out again!

I have changed her feed now to fast fibre too, but she doesn't care for it and is currently on hunger strike, tough.lol.
