Laminitis and know it all people.............

Have a mare on the yard that is crippled with laminitis, owner is the sort who knows best, but this horse is so bad it makes my blood boil, she has said she can't afford the vet, but then is happy to buy a new Bl**dy BED, what the F***. The YO has had words with her and she has given her some c**p about speaking to the vet, but she has the same vet as me and I know full well that they would not give her advice over the phone, they would come out as an emergency. What would you lot do, I'm on the verge of smacking this women in the face and I really do not do violence...........Makes my blood boil....... Sorry rant over.....

Oh and to top it all she can't even be bothered to give her horse any TLC, poor thing looks like it's going to commit suicide......

We had a rule on our livery yard, that if the horse needed a vet we got one then contacted the owner... maybe you could do the same...(it is up to the vet then to bill her)
 
Your YO has a responsibility of care over every animal on her yard, so why doesnt she call the vet out for the pony and bill the owner for it?

My friend recently lost her pony 3 weeks ago after battling Lami for 6 months, she did EVERYTHING possible for that pony but in the end she was getting abcesses and the pedal bone collapsed.

If the owner at your yard wont take responsibility for her animal, then he YO should do something.
 
This is for the YO to deal with as she is also responsible for the welfare of the pony.

If the owner still wont have a sick animal treated then she and the YO 'could' be open to prosecution for cruelty.
 
Ditto what spaniel said! Totally unacceptable, YO needs to get off her backside & take immediate action on this!

Yo should know that under the new Animal Welfare Act it is an offence not to supply veterinary attention when an animal needs it. Owner sounds a bit of an arse tbh.
 
Why do these people have horses? Poor thing, sounds like it needs urgent vet help before it's too late. I agree that YO should call the vet - after all it doesn't reflect well on her if she has a severely laminitic horse on her yard that's not being treated. If owner objects, then YO can always quote the Animal Welfare Act, like jacksprat says, or report owner to the RSPCA. Sounds like the owner needs a good slap!
 
Agree with others. The YO has a duty of care and should be advised to phone the vet to have the animal treated.

Not an easy situation to be in though.....
 
I know exactly your position as I found myself in it a few days ago! Ended up having a blazing row with owner in question and she had the gawl to say (as she walked off) I dont look after my horse - if she was closer she may have got a right hook!!

The word negligence on both the owner & YO springs to mind here. Personally I couldn't give a s**t who's horse it is get the vet out....unbelievable this would never happen on our yard, you get told off if you're horse puts on 2 pounds!!!

Can't think of any other organisations. It means that no one on the yard pays the vet bill, the owner will be educated and or prosecuted.
 
Going to speak to the YO tonight, armed with a copy of the Animal Welfare Act 2006......... Other than phoning the vet myself (which it might come to that) there is not alot else I can do..... Oh well apart from punching her lights out.........

I always remember someone saying to me, "If you can't afford to pay a vet bill, then you can't afford to own a horse!"
 
I stuck a copy of that on the girls stable door coz no-one ever saw her to speak to. The following night was our blazing row but it must have done a little bit of good coz people have commented to me that they have now seen her taking "some interest" in her poor pony (who lives out 24h). Initially we called the RSPCA coz he was in a shocking state with open wounds etc but they said if he has water, food and we are checking/caring for him they can do nothing.

This girl neither pays her livery bill or her farrier so why the hell doesnt she pull her finger out to sell the poor horse to someone who will take care of it! Sorry - rant over!
 
Like u I can not get me head around these kind of people - y own a horse if you have no way of paying for it! Ive offered to advertise her horse for her at work coz its free and Id rather see it sold than not looked after properly but shes having none of it

I do wonder about some people. There is a horse at our yard that was crippled with Laminitis last summer and is overweight too. Not only has it had lammi but in the past 3 years has done a tendon apparently on almost every leg!! The owner thinks it can come straight out its stable and go to a competition!!
They put it on Aubiose for a while but claimed it was too expensive, er hello you give it 3 bales of straw a week (2.50 a pale). Yet the owners can afford to buy a new ifor williams trailer and keep a horse lorry taxed and insured. They also have 3 other horses and 4 youngsters that they have bred. And to make this word this horse is the YM!!

To me it sounds like you need to get in contact with the YO.
 
She doesn't think twice about buying a leather bed, what the f*** is a leather bed.... She is rather strange......... She had two horses last year, but couldn't cope with hte gelding so she let him go to a really ncie home, wish she had sent the mare too..........

Laminitis is treated as an equine emergency and the vet should be called without any further delay. The horse will be in terrible pain. (Like having your finger nail slowly turn off).

The horse has been neglected so you should also immediately contact the ILPH Welfare line (International League for the Protection of Horses who will send out one of their inspectors (normally ex-policeman). www.ilph.org If you see a horse in distress call the ILPH welfare line on 0870 871 1927

The new welfare act is now in forcer so it will be much easier to prosecute the owner and remove the horse from her care..

This is no longer the case with the new Welfare Act, call them again!!
 
That's disgusting. My boy is recovering from lami and I've been going down the yard 3 times a day for almost 2 months now and probably will be for a good while yet, and doing everything possible to help him. Everything's been expensive because even though I have insurance his colic and subsequent lami happened within the 14 day exclusion period, but I've still done everything to look after him and help him get better! That's what being a horse owner is all about. People like that girl make me mad.

Of course by the time lami symptoms show the disease is already in advanced stages so the poor pony must be in agony
