laminitis and metformin

Alfie has been on box rest since march with laminitis which was triggered by a steroid injection for an inflamed stifle. He was absolutely crippled with it .For the last 4 weeks he has been on metformin and what a transformation...we are overjoyed. He was originally tested for IR but came back borderline and wouldn't eat the glucose feed , so we just kept trudging along ..we had some days where he was better that others but there was no real progress that lasted. He has been walking (ridden ) for 10 mins in school for last 3 days and is perfectly sound. I just wanted to say to anyone else in the same position ....don't give up ..we never thought this day would come , but it has :)
 
That's great. My appy had lami last year and vet wanted to pts straight away as he had 11 and 12 degree rotation but we said no we would try. A month later he had more X-rays he had rotated a little more but wasn't as lame so we carried on and vet recommend bloods as we told him about him being chubby no matter what we did. Turnt out he had IR and since being on the metformin he has been better than before, more energy than he has ever had.
He even took the bit and had a gallop when I asked for a nice canter the other day :D
 
Thats gr8 for you:) I agree with you. My mare was on full box rest since last july. Its a rough road - many hicups - highs and lows. But if you stick at it - can afford it and have a horse that is willing to accept the pain and box rest , it puts you in a stronger position to get through it.
 
Glad to hear your good news. Interested in this drug as I currently have a pony with lami. Is it expensive and will vets only prescribe it in certain circumstances?
 
That is great news and fingers crossed that the progress continues. Once my lad was over the worst he improved no end from there and I really took my time getting him back onto grass and being worked again. In fact, even when I could ride him on the roads again I left it a full year before introducing trot work...just in case.
It is a long and painful journey but great to hear of small successes of recovery.

My horse has just had steroid injections. She had lami a few years ago and therefore I was really reluctant to use steroids. I'm checking her digital pulse/hooves twice a day as the next six weeks are particularly risky.

It's good to know that Metformin can help as I'd believed lami to be irreversible when steroids have been given.
