I tend to put my little mare in a large earth floored barn with a deep shavings bed in one area and water, soaked hay in reach. As she improves she moves herself about the barn and when walking fairly normally I apply styrofoam pads and she goes out into the yard with other horses during the day then and in at night gradually increasing to with them, or some of them, all the time when she is fully sound.
I separate her more so she isn't hassled and can rest as much as she wants when she's been in an acute attack.
She has the others round the barn all the time and a barred gate so they can get close. I have learned over the years that she can't have grazing past pickings in the yards so she lives in them but they are big (1/4 acre ish) and varied, surrounding the buildings and she always has some or all of the herd with her.
ps. Lol. Better clarify "fairly normally". I mean just the odd gimp, walking normally otherwise.
