AdorableAlice's thread prompted me to maybe mention this for those who don't know it exists, especially at this time of year. It is very useful, quite area specific when I compare what I get to others not that far away and doesn't always come up with what you would think.
For instance I am surprised we are quite so low atm, given the rainfall and current sunshine outside.

I think it is because it works on NSCs rather than growth. So doesn't really take into account that there may be more grass for them to eat due to growth so much. Stressed grass rather than growing grass/how much is in your field. That is still up to us to monitor ;)

It was a lot less nerve wracking when I was strip grazing them on foggage all winter, it looked dead but they ate it and it bulked them out nicely.

Now back to juggling bulk versus short stressed grass versus how much hay to top it up with (more than I fed all winter, I reckon...).

where can i get this app ester?

You read my mind! I tried to download it today, but as its not free I couldn't as I've forgotten my password. Will do it tonight!

Ive had this app on my iPhone and iPad for a while now and find it very useful. I check it daily at this time of year, and whilst it's not a definitive guide it certainly helps me to judge risk. It finds the nearest weather station I think .... Downloadable from App Store for Mac users.

Just downloaded :)

Right at the bottom end for me too, which is good as my mum is ignoring me and turning my horse on the grass in the day regardless. I'm trying the nicely approach at the moment, if the app changes they'll be bother!

Still well down in the lower end of the green here today. Hope its accurate as my 5yo homebred is ignoring her pile of soaked hay and is busy scouring her bare winter paddock for all the vivid green shoots that are appearing in the sun after a wet night...

we've moved up to amber today,

perhaps the grass felt as stressed as I did when it threw it down sideways with rain after I had decided to cycle into work!

I love my Windows phone but the the apps availability is pants, sadly. I downloaded the app onto my iPad instead.

Ah, now there's an idea! I have a work ipad but I am sure they won't mind if I pay for it with my own apple account (which I have)

This morning, the app has risen to over the halfway point here, to about 55% and into the yellow part of the scale. I'm reassured by this, as up til now it's been bumping along at the bottom end of the green at c10% since I downloaded it, despite us having several days of sun on wet grass and me worrying about the lami risk.

The difference is that last night we had a heavy grass frost (air temp dropped to 1c), and now there is bright sun on frosted grass, air temp around 2.5c, conditions which as we all know are a potential lami trigger due to raised fructan levels in the grass.

So the laminitis app has gone up in my estimation. Neds are currently out but munching on hay not grass, which is what I'd have done anyway with them given the conditions, but at least the app and I are in agreement :).

Wow! I wasn't expecting such a dramatic change in one day. Mine is high too today, frosty night and blue sky day today. They are in our stable yard with minimal grass and with hay to eat, so hopefully they'll be ok.
