Laminitis (grass induced)

This sounds similar to my boy. My Vet said she thinks he has been unlucky. He is the slimmest out of the three too. I’m quite glad he is in now though because it’s growing stupidly out there at the moment and it’s going to be mold again this week. My Vet is good and has texted me back this evening - I sent her a few videos from today. She is happy with his progress but thinks it isn’t a good idea to reintroduce grass at the moment with how it is but then said ‘maybe he can start hand grazing for 5 mins per day in a few weeks’. Now I like to follow vets advice of course I do but if I hand graze him for 5 mins he will probably get as much as he would get if he was out for an hour in a restricted paddock. I would have thought turning him out on a bare bit with soaked hay would have been better for him that letting him gorge for 5 mins?

I guess that depends on where you hand graze, as to what grass is available? Or hand graze in a muzzle?

That’s a good idea! Today I gave him some sticky weed as I know it’s a good anti inflammatory and good for cleansing the lymphatic system.

If you’ve got one, a small sickle along some of these highway verges which are shooting up atm. Bit third world, but a lot easier on your hands, and encourages re growth.

Nettles contain anti diabetic compounds and are surprisingly palatable to ponies especially if a bit wilted; the dose is 200mg/kg extract but basically the younger the plants the better and the more the better
And it makes their breath smell lovely apparently

Mine LOVES nettles, when I was on a yard he would sometimes spend a couple of weeks in the little orchard that had enormous banks of nettles around all sides. I would gradually cut them down with a grass strimmer and leave them to wilt, and he'd eat them all up. A good system all round!
