Hi, have just turned the boys out on new field for the winter and within a couple of days one has laminits never had it before, its December! This time last year they were all in due to snow and ice. I think i'm going to start keeping goldfish.

It's been such a tricky year for the grass. I am strip grazing my winter field because the it is up to their ears.

Fingers crossed your boy turns round quickly. At least January can be relied on to bump the grass off.

Goldfish can be tricky too :)

Yikes! As W says, goldfish can be sticky beasties to keep. I'd suggest a rocking horse (though fingers crossed against wood worm ).

Hope your lad/lass is okay. Hate Laminitis. So far, touch wood, we haven't had a bout for over two years, but the herd is moving onto a huge, fresh field next weekend, so back to the grazing muzzle.

One of my shetlands always used to get a spell of it when the grass had been frosty. Not sure why and it didn't continue through winter it was just the back end of autumn when we had the first few frosts

Ooo hope your boy gets better soon - Lami in December is unusual (unless you have a Cushings horse)

Frosty grass can be tricky for those sensitive to sugars as because the grass is stressed the sugars rise to the leaf (as opposed to the root) That is why for Cushings horses they cannot be exposed to frosty grass)

Please be careful :( My friend lost her mare last January, had always been prone to lami but had been OK for a year or two and had never suffered in winter before, she came down with it really badly after a spell of frosty conditions and deteriorated so quickly the only thing to do was Pts. A lot of people just dont realise how tricky this time of year can be, it's not just a spring grass thing unfortunately!
