I have a 19 year old TBxconnemara gelding who has recently had a small bout of laminitis due to the rich grass .We had the farrier out today who confirmed that although he doesnt look fat his feet are tender and crest is rather hard so he is now on box rest untill the vet feels he is safe in the feild. I'v had horses around 7 years and Glen has been the 1st one to have laminitis and i have been told with him being older its alot more dangerous... so i would really appreciate any help you can offer me on the situation (and any bordem breaking tips please) x

The main thing is that it has been spotted quickly. The vet needs to see the horse and recommend appropriate treatment. With an older horse there is always the risk that it is a symptom of cushings disease and your vet will want to rule this out.

There's a lot about this year. My mare who is 21 has had a mild attack. We've had her 19 years and never had a problem before. she has had some bute and is on box rest with soaked hay. Looks a lot better already. She will hopefully go back out with limited grazing at the weekend.

Hang a swede on a bit of string from his stable roof, far enough from the wall so he can't pin it against it to bite into it. It keeps them busy for hours, especially if you go to a market or fruit and veg shop rather than a supermarket - they sell much bigger ones which are harder for the to get their gnashers around!
