A thin horse won't get Laminitis

Cereal Feed can't cause Laminitis

What hope is there when a Farrier will dish out this kind of advice?

OMG I have known two TBs DIE from lami!! And of course my own mare died from lami last year and since then I've become a bit too passionate about it!

Any horse can get laminitis as it is not necessarily due to weight, but down to ingestion of too much starch etc, and an imbalance in the hind gut causing a release of toxins into the blood, leading to weakening of the laminae, and often separating of the laminae. Fat horses are EXPECTED to be at risk because they are the ones that are evidently geting plenty of fructan-rich grass etc. Also, smaller (even fatter) ponies are more likely to get over a bout of lami than a large horse, because of weight on the feet and pressure on the laminae.

A lot of lami cases are also caused by stress or perhaps infection (as in my mare's case), medication... all of which can disrupt the digestion massively.

I used to ride a pony which had previously gone down with laminitis after he broke into the farm's grain hopper, so that theory is c**p. Of course a thin horse can also get laminitis - it could be from medication, concussion to the hoof, a previous bout of "fat" laminitis makes any horse far more vulnerable for a repeat attack.

Hmmm I was informed by an elderly and incredibly well-respected (round here

) "horseman" that only ponies get laminitis, not horses

My OH (farrier) spends more time warning people about laminitis than he does shoeing horses

Mad lady at the old yard reckoned grass & excess weight had nothing to do with laminitis. In fact the only thing that causes laminitis is bad luck. Apparently her horses had a lot of bad luck. So nothing to do with their obesity then.

He should tell that to the owner of the 17hh WB that had to be destroyed just down the road.

I was just gobsmacked. I argued with him but he was not having it.

Oh he said that Robert Eustace is a fraud too!. I may not agree with all he says, but he's put some serious money in to research so kudos for that.

Needless to say he doesn't come anywhere near my horse!

How on earth can a FARRIER be so stupid?

Luckily mine isn't; and warned me last summer that my lean TB mare was at risk from developing concussion induced lamintis. I heeded his advice and have had no problems, last year, this year, or any year

There are some unbelievably dumb people in the horse world; like my old YO, who swore blind horses wouldn't eat ragwort (I know generally they don't eat it when its growing, but thats no excuse for leaving it to grow rampant in the field!!!) and that cereal couldn't make a horse hyper. No, of course not...

Anything can cause lamnitis, most of the time its down to weight issues butits not always the case.
