Hi, I posted this in the "Vets" but not much response so I hope you don't mind me posting it here:-

Quickly: I have posted before - My mare was diagnosed laminitic at the end of March, she's had regular x-rays, medication and was wearing her 4th set of Imprints.

When I went to feed my mare her haynet yesterday afternoon she was lying down and found it very hard to get up. When she got up she could not weight bear on her right fore. I called vet & farrier, they came very quickly and was advised to take her to the vets.

Her feet are very good (no cracks) and she has new hoof growth at the coronet band. On x-raying there was no movement or rotation but she has serum in her hoof. They have put metal heart bars on to avoid alot of sole pressure. They are also tubbing her feet in epson salt.

Has anyone else had this? Is this a usual setback?

When you say serum in her hoof showed up...how do you mean? Do you mean there is evidence of an abcess?
Difficult to say without knowing what management routine she was on, whether she had been given the all clear from laminitis beforehand or was still on box rest etc.
But my horse took a good 8 months to get over his laminitis fully...he kept getting re-ocurring small flare ups for no apparent reason and then a series of abscesses too.
I hope your horse gets better soon...stick with it and you will get there...ups and downs are very common I learnt with laminitis.
The good news is that there is no rotation...that is always a plus and makes the healing process so much easier.

Thankyou for the hugs :)

Pottamus - She was diagnosed at the end of March, her left fore was slightly rotated. Then 5weeks ago her right fore slightly rotated, vet thought she was favouring one leg and weight bearing on the right.

She has been stabled since she was diagnosed only coming out for x-rays. Was wearing her 4th set of Imprint shoes and was x-rayed before shoeing every 3-4weeks.

When she was taken to the vets yesterday, after examination the vet said to me that there was serum in her hoof because of the sole pressure. Is this an abscess? Would this not have shown on previous x-rays?

Thanks

Not really an answer to your post, sorry, but given the topic you would probably find Jaime Jacksons 'Founder, it's prevention and cure' an interesting read.

An abscess may show up on an x-ray as a shadow but not if it's not there at the time so to speak. Not heard of serum before. My mare took nearly a year to fully recover and has rotation in both fronts, she was on box rest for a long time but is now back living out 24/7 and back in work. She did have an abscess which luckily burst quickly, they can be in agony and hopping lame with them

I did a blog as I found so many conflicting views and so wrote down what I found worked for me, not sure it will help you much in your situation but this is the link http://lilylaminitis.blogspot.com/

Fingers crossed for a full recover
