just out of curiosity!

how many of our horses/ponies have had laminitis since the snow?

my pony has had it for the first time, ( is overweight but lives out, barefoot, unrugged, only fed hay and handfull of low cal for mag ox, minimal grazing.

managed fine for five yrs in summer, yet caught out in winter but on no more feed.

Had my mare for 8 years and she came down with laminitis in March 2010. If you remember it was freezing and we had lots of snow, then all of a sudden the weather went into double figures with the sun coming out and the grass turned all lush.

I only used to give my mare a handful of dengie good doer, she had ad-lib hay and was clipped but under-rugged.

My horse has it still, its been 4 weeks, we have had a lot of snow this winter, he lives out, ive put it down to concussion, which he got 4 years ago.

ameeyal, could you section off an area with electric tape for him and feed him soaked hay? Reducing his grass intake is important in an acute attack of laminitis.

Mine is very prone to laminitis and is now fed only on soaked hay, no grass. He got it last year in the cold weather and came down with it again this year just before Xmas. No changes to diet, and no grass. Has improved a lot since weather improved, now sound in walk but not comfortable in trot.

Hi. My little new forest mare got laminitis just before the first lot of snow at end of november. She too has been diagnosed with the early stage of cushings, she is only 17, which is young for cushings.
She is only now gradually coming off of bute but still having imprint shoes, as her pedal bone had slightly rotated, and still on box rest for at least another 2-3 weeks till off bute and sound.
Feel for you people going through the same, and your ponies.

Mine went down with it at 17 too, it isnt a young age - i know several at the ages of 12/13 that have it also.
Its incredibly frustrating, but once you can get a good routine going and be aware of the little things that can trigger it, i find it reasonably ok to manage my boy - touch wood.
