i wanted to know what your opinions are on laminitis supplements, are they worth it? i feed laminaze 5*, but i think that this little supplement is not going to save my mare from the likes of laminitis if it were to happen, so i am therefore thinking to not bother once its run out, she is fit and well and not overweight and her feet are getting there now since the neglect of the riding school ruined them!
what do you think? is it worth it?
i can see obvious benefits with certain suppplements for example those with glucosymine as these do aid joint function, but i am really not sure that this laminaze supplement is really worth it, surely thee rest of the management will be whats paramount to avoid it
your thoughts are needed on this please? keep giving them or dont bother?
thanks

I use LamiGard on 2 of mine that had chronic Laminitis in the past and i cannot say if it is just coincidence or the lamigard but neither have had it since they went on the supplement. Both had chronic lami for the first instance and had less severe recurrences afterwards. One has been on LG for 4 years the other 3 years now with no even minor signs of lami.

I think the only one proven to do any good is the Lami Gard - is that the stuff you can only get through your vet? In a red tub? Apparently its got a bit of proof backing it, whereas I dont believe any others do? I fed it for a while but took mine off it when I heard my neighbours ponies were on it and still got lami as usual!

I have 2 ponies who've had lami. 1 had it really badly as a 5yo, he's now 20 and never (touch wood) had it since. He's not on any special supplements - just Safe & Sound chaff, an all round vit & min supplement and his joint supplement. He gets grass etc. we just keep an eye on him obviously. The only thing we fed at the time was Farriers Formula which is brilliant for hoof condition.

My other is a shetland who's had lami attacks for the past year (no matter what was done, she's now never on grass ever again and is finally sound

). I don't feed any specific lami supps because I dont think they're worth it, as long as your feeding a high spec vit & min supplement anyway.

If I were you, since she still has dodgy hooves, Id put her onto Farriers Formula instead.

thanks for your replies much appreciated, any one else got any views on this?
i just bought a vitamin and mineral supplement today to use when i run out shortly, i just really dont think the laminaze is worth it, placebo me thinks

i used to give my pony laminaze until vet told me i might as well feed the pony the money!!!! so now i just give good quality feed and a vitamin supplement pony hasnt had lami since.

I feel that there is some science behind some of these products, however as in the case of arthritis remedies, I do think that some of these companies feed off the owner's desperation. Most of us would do whatever we could for our animals, but, unfortunately, throwing money at it is generally not the answer.
