Can anyone give me some tips on getting back my laminitic 22yr old mares top line back.
Although I don't want her to gain masses of weight, I would like to have her looking a little better.
She has had one very bad bout of laminitis, so I have managed to keep it at bay so far.
Thank you all in advance.

My horse is the other way.He is recovering from lami and has lost alot of weight but he still has a slight cresty neck (was huge at first). He has suspected insulin resistance but clear of Cushings.

does she have cushings.? i am struggling with topline on my old boy, he has cushings.. dont think they ever get it back..

Hi, No my vet has ruled Cushings out, it's just difficult keeping weight on when she is working & avoiding the things she can't eat at the same time!

If she's on restricted grazing and a veteran I would recommend additional vitamin E in the diet.

If she's struggling to put on muscle, then I would also like to feed extra, limiting amino acids such as lysine and methionine.

Isn't Greengold dried grass?

Greengold is an alfafa product.
I will take a look into that, although she does have a vit/mineral supplement already.
Thank you.

This is an interesting thread and is a bit like my problem.

I have a 14yr old mare who had a nasty bout of laminitis last year whilst pregnant. She is petty slim now with a 5 month foal at foot and I don't intend to wean the foal until next Spring so she will be running the milk bar all winter.

At the moment she gets 1 scoop Dengie's healthy hooves, a double handful of soaked alfalfa pellets and 150g Top Spec's anti-lam twice a day. Since she foaled she has been out full time on fairly limited grazing though more than she would have been on if she didn't have a foal at foot. She'll be coming in at night soon and will have around 6kg of hay overnight (foalie will undoubtedly have some of this) whereas she would have 3kg of hay normally. Oh yes foalie is The Monster Fat Foal so I think that Mum is putting all of her energy into making super-charged milk.

I would like to start getting her back into gentle exercise but she has got so little top line that I am loathe to actually sit on her at the moment. (She is 13.2hh Icelandic and I am 5'1" so she's perfectly capable of carrying me and indeed has done so with great gusto for the last few years but I am conscious that she has very little muscle over her back.) I have been doing a small amount of long reining to start building her back up but I wondered if I could help that along with a change in feeding.

Any thoughts on how to feed her for topline? I did think about trying her on some linseed but am struggling with the fear of adding too many calories....
