Hi, my pony was recently diagnosed with minor laminitis. I was given bute by the vet to put in his feed twice a day, but he's refusing to eat it - presumably because he can taste it. He needs to eat the bute to manage the pain but I can't get him to eat it! It's not because he's not hungry because he tries to steal food from the other horses. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get him to eat the bute without tasting it, or other treatment options that might work instead?
Thanks:)

I've tried 2 different feeds, his normal feed - Calm and Condition, which is a type of pellets that are soaked in water. Also, happy hoof, which is specific for laminitis prone ponies and is dried grass with horse nuts etc. Neither work!

I have a horse that wont eat bute, but will eat danillon. Maybe ask your Vet about using danillon instead. Some of the tips to get horses to eat bute really aren't suitable for a laminitic - I've known people put it in a molasses sandwich! *eeek*

I tried apples and he turned his nose up at it again! Its him being fussy because I gave my other pony a tiny bit to try and he ate it happily. I'm going to ring the vets tomorrow morning and ask if there's something else I can try. I'm also going to start using devil's clore regularly because it's a form of painkiller which might help. I might have to use a syringe if all else fails!

try here and ask your vet about Danilon rather than bute >>http://horse-care-and-advice.weebly.com/veterinary.html

Thanks for everyone's advice, asked the vet and is coming out to give him a metacam jab this morning to save me trying to get him to eat anything else!

Apples have the highest sugar level over all fruits, carrots believe it or not are more fibre and water, so please dont feed apples to a pony with laminitus. Mix the bute into a paste and place on horses tongue or squirt into mouth with a syringe.
