Laminitis - why is she getting worse?

please stop the fast fibre!!! I have seen this give laminitis to another pony who had been lami free for several years!

You just need a molasses free chaff baileys do one!

You need to eliminate all sugar

Lost of support to the foot, your farrier may have to come out and put on heart bars and put in equipak to support the pedal bone

I thought fast fibre was Ok for laminitics?? She is only getting a small amount, just enough to mix her tablets in - she is on Metformin, bute and an antibiotic. Other than that she is just getting 12 hour soaked hay. The farrier is coming out tomorrow morning and bringing pads, glue on shoes and some other things to try. The vet has emailed me copies of the x rays to show the farrier when he arrives.

Wagtail - thank you for asking and for your advice. I cant decide if she is a touch better today or not. If she is, it is only marginal. She seemed a bit happier in herself and was shaking less when hubby tried to look at the puncture wound on her back foot but is still severely lame.

I am so sorry it's this bad, it's a really horrible illness and unfortunately when they have cushings or EMS even with a really careful owner, they often get lami.

I know someone with a Cushings induced laminitis prone pony which she manages with the help of magnet leg-wraps. This regime has been successful for several years.

OP, please take your vets advice (if you haven't already) on what you should be feeding her. Have you planned more x-rays yet?

Don't feel bad, it doesn't matter how careful you are, EMS is a horrid condition and I really feel for you going through this.

Hope things start to look up soon. xx

its a little odd though, if its an abcess then you would think the bute would help to take the mask the pain - but of course the issue is that it may not burst...would want the vet and farrier out - can you x-ray on site?

Ha. Nope. Even on ridiculous amounts of bute, my (non-laminitic) pony was still dog lame with an abscess. At the time, we thought it was a fracture, hence the bute.

Good luck OP - once they're laminitic prone, particularly with EMS, no matter how careful you are, some ponies still get it.

And please listen to your vet for advice on feeding :)

Please try soak her hay for 24hrs not 12 and then rinse her hay through till the water runs clear, I was also recommended setback salts for my mare >http://www.trinity-consultants.com/index.php/store/product/71-setback-salts. Which are good for laminitics, also triniti consultants do things to help laminitics who are going through a bout of it.

Keep a very close eye on her feet for any sign of puss trying to escape from the coronet band -if your worried about diet speak to D&H nutritional advise. The other thing you need to be aware of is she could get a bit of liver disease from the toxin build up and if this is the case then fast fibre must not be given.

Take a look at the website I posted above as it is saved info from previous posters who were willing to share for future laminitic cases, they lived and learned through it and now shared it.

The vet didn't seem to have any problem with the fast fibre and soaked hay. She's not liking the soaked hay much and is leaving a lot of it, which is worrying. The farrier came today, looked at the x rays (he had previously spoken with the vet) and has shod her with metal heart bar shoes. He had bought glue on shoes and pads etc with him but said she was fine with the metal ones. He is going to report back to the vet again today. I spoke with the vet myself to let him know how we got on and he is has said he is happy with things and will speak to me again next week, although he does want to try and get her off the bute as soon as possible.
