hi, has anyone got any advise as im not sure what i should be doing, my pony came down with lami last september after box rest and advise from vet not any signs of improvment, had vet back had x rays blood test for cushings constant bute she is now on pergolide for her test results were positive, she has been having one pill a day no improvement she now on one and a half pills a day she seems a little better although still uncomfortable, my farrier says i need to get her out of stable and get her walking it will help her in recovering, problem is she is still uncomfortable on her feet she is 24 years old not sure what i should do for the best, she has no special shoes on or pads the vet and farrier both said that for her it is not a good idea as her feet are so hard the pads will not make any difference at all.

It could be me writing this! Our 17 y/o Sect Dx mare has just been diagnosed with cushings and is on 1mg Pergolide per day - fingers crossed she seems to be improving.
Our vet advised us to open her stable door and leave her to wander out of her own accord - this seems to work she doesn't have pads on but does have heart bars on (she has had these for a while).
If she didn't want to wander, she wouldn't if it would hurt her. Not sure what else to suggest :( when Kel started to wander, she was in a lot of pain and it was taking us 25 minutes to get her back to her stable!
Good luck with your horse and PM me if you want any more details - we have been dealing with this in our mare for over 12 months now and it has only just been diagnosed.

ETA if you have anywhere that is softer or more even ground it is ideal - our stable block is sort of covered with straw down the middle so it is nice and soft for Kelly to wander on :)

I had huge problems with my little old mare after she had been out on loan a few years ago. Your vet is of course correct, walking her will help - enormously. I am lucky in that we have a school on the yard so I could walk her round there.

My pony was a couple of years older than yours at the time & although I felt awful dragging her out of her stable, it really did make the difference - so much so, I started to notice it within a few days. They need to walk about to loosen up & get the blood pumping. She had also developed athritis from being stood for such a long time so the walking got rid of that too.

Once I got her out & moving she was right within about a month & I was back riding her after about 2.5 months. That was about 4 years ago & we have never looked back. Good luck :)

thanks for your reply, its a horrible thing to deal with i am thinking of buying some boots for her she might feel more comfy to walk in as my yard is a bit stoney.

wow thanks for that, i shall make a start on that tomorrow and hopefully it will speed up her recovery, with a bit of luck she will be fine by the summer.

If I were you I would get some boots and pads and boot her up and get her walking out in-hand. Is she turned out? What is she fed? My pony came in with laminitis last week and is on box rest but I boot her up twice a day and take her on a 10 minute walk, more for her sanity, but it gets the circulation going.

When my lad was on box rest with laminitis he was getting so stressed by being in that he stopped eating and then start box walking none stop. My vet advised getting him out in a small pen area outside his stable (his stable is a mobile one in his field) as he would do more harm than good box walking. I did this and the change in him was remarkable and he went from strength to strength feet wise...probably helped by not being stressed too!
Just monitor your horse each day carefully, check how they move, rest and pulses to ensure that they only ever improve and do not cause extra problems through the extra movement. The boots will be a good idea too.

My horse has been on box rest for 6 weeks now with laminitis, he started to walk better with heartbars on, i like them to get circulation going in their legs, so i turned him out for 2 hours to eat grass, i did this for 3 days, the next morning he was baddly lame again, he did no running around, i can only think it was the grass, so now im back to square one :(

oh no poor you back to box rest, next time put him on bare field if you can get another horse to eat the grass down for you and just a tiny paddock my pony has been in for five months now seems like a lifetime. :( :(

A muzzle is all i can recommend, stressed "eaten" down grass is just as bad as the lush stuff, dont be deceived by the fact of a "bare" paddock.

used a few different ones she gets her muzzle out she is so greedy so i just used to strip graze her untill she came down with cushings and developed lami.
