My mare had her first strike of Laminitis in December (think it was due to me stupidly over feeding her). She's 13 years old. She has got over the laminitis now after 3 months of box rest and a real strict diet.. .. I started taking her out for a ride again a few weeks ago and she is totally sound on the roads but when I took her down a stony path she was pretty foot sore.. there is no digital pulse or heat and she has lost tons of weight but i'm slightly worried that maybe she has low grade laminitis ? or is this normal for her still to be slightly foot sore? I would appreciate some advice please :-)

Lami in December screams EMS/IR and even more so when you say shes overweight. I would want bloods done.
Also is she barefoot?
What diet is she currently on?
Being 'footy' on stones could be your first warning sign about a lami attack.

No she isnt barefoot... All she has now is fast fibre and hi fi lite she is turned out for a few hours a day again now Ive recently started giving her magnitude as have heard thats meant to help! Before she had the lami she was having way too much haylage, alfa a oil, baileys number 4, i also kept bringing her and my gelding into my garden for grass...So wondering if maybe the diet she was on was too rich?!

Thanks for ur help.

Why was she on all that high sugar/starch feed?..Is she in very hard work?.Letting your horses graze your garden may have been a massive contributory factor in your mare getting Lami..It sounds as if your mare has been totally overloaded with sugar/starch..I would also get tested for Insulin Resistance or EMS.. Does she have a huge cresty neck and fat pads over her eyes asnd at the tail head?.

If she is shod and still footy on stones i would be being extra careful with her as to me thats her warning you. Does she need a feed at all or is she having suppliments etc? Is she being ridden? Exercise was massively beneficial to my EMS gelding.

Yes i know now that the garden and feed she was on was a major contribute in the lami :-( ! Well she only has a tiny amount now as she has biotin, magnitude and naf superflex which i wouldnt really want too stop her having as shes always been on them. Yeah she is ridden.. Shes perfect out on roads but then if theres a few stones round a lane she is quite foot sore.. So i avoid lanes! I am only walking at the moment due too getting her fitness up again but she is full off it and happy in herself! She did have a big cresty neck when she had the lami but its all gone down and she has not fat patches or anything!

Have you used a weightape?
I find it hard to believe that shes gone from having a cresty neck to not in two months. It took me over a year to get mine down to an acceptable weight (please dont think im having a go!)
Also lots of ridden walk work will be ideal, get her striding out up hill will really help, especially if shes full of it!

Mine lost the crest as she lost the weight over a 3 month period. so I would say it is very possible if feeding 2.25% of body weight for weight loss over a winter period where there is less of a grazing factor to have to estimate so it can be quite accurate and losing weight gradually but steadily.

Op I would swap the hifilite for hi fi molasses free just to completely get rid of the sugar coating, it is just as palatable.
