A pony on a friends yard went down with laminitis at the end of last week. The woman who owned it (in 70's) had been away on holiday abroad and the pony who is mid teens was turned out on a lot of pasture 24/7.She was advised by her friend to put it on a shavings bed straight away that morning and to give it one sachet of bute again straight away and one that evening and then get the vet out the next day.She gave it soaked hay and was planning on it being box rested for at least a month.Initially she hosed its feet as it had a bounding pulse.I thought that this was the last thing that you should do hosing the feet.i keep an eye on my mares digital pulse and she is strip grazed but I'd like to be prepared in case my mare should ever go down with the same.Waht's the right way to deal with laminitis in the first instance?

Get the vet as should be treated as an emergency as would need pain relief and xrays to confirm if any rotation, deep bed limited soaked hay.

I rang the laminitis trust and went with what they said.

It's all on here, including prevention, first aid treatment, rehabilitation and underlying causes. Well worth a read because it is based on experience and expertise rather than anecdotal evidence from those who have been through it.

thanks it says cold hose the feet if they are warm but not already cold, which is what I though you shouldn't do so glad I checked. I could have sworn that's what everyone did in the olden days and was told it was wrong in more modern times.
