is it correct if your pony is prone to lami you shouldnt rug them to much? people up my yard keep theres with out rugs or light weights so they stay cold, is this right???? never heard of this before

Its usually associated with over weight horses as basically if you are not rugging up your horse (ie keeping it colder) then you are encouraging the horse to generate its own heat from the energy/nutrients you are feeding rather than storing it as fat, which in turn helps with conditons that may be connected to over weight horses/ponies such as lami.

If there lami ponies dont get rugged then they are possibly natives, and lots of natives dont need rugging as they get such a fluffy coat!
Also, if they are rugged then they dont use the energy they consume to keep warm so it goes on them as stores of fat, and the more sugars, fats ect their bodies use to keep them warm if they aren't rugged, the less sugar, fat ect that builds up and can cause another burst of lamitis :/ With the laminetic pony i ride, she lives out all year round, if the weather is really cold damp and frosty she she has a rain sheet on it night as shes not fat, and we dont really want her to loose any weight a shes as fit as a fiddle, but when it snows or is dreadfull she has a lightweight or mediumweight turnout on at night. Even though shes not fat, shes very fit and is fed happy hoof or safe and sound which are feeds made for lamis, if shes out on the grass, even though the feild is quite bare, and not ridden for a week her feet get hot and you can feel the pulse so shes very sensitive to laminitis!! So when we rug her up properly over the winter she will most probably suffer from an attack of laminitis in spring, so you really do have to be very cafeful about how mugh sugars they are consuming and using :)

My pony is lami prone, a welshie, lives out 24/7 and is already in a medium weight rug as she also suffers from the cold. With her its more a case of watching what she eats and keeping her warm in the winter.

Laminitis has many causes ohboy. Did your pony have lami because of weight, metabolic issues, stress, mechanical issues or something else?

Depending on the cause of the lami will determine whether you don't rug, rug lightly or rug snugly I'd have said. The most important thing of all is to give your pony lots of ad lib hay or haylage, well soaked beforehand as that will help to keep him or her warm without piling on the pounds.

thankyou all for your replies, its such a worry never had a pony prone to lami before so its so hard knowing what to to for the best.
ishmad it was weight related lami, shes a little welsh b very fine and feels the cold so finding hard knowing what weight rugs to use on her, also show her so dont want her getting to teddy bear looking
