Hi,

I have not been on this forum for a long time now but would like some advice.

About 3 weeks ago my horse came hopping lame in from the field, the vet thought it was an hoof abscess, hot and wet poulticed it but nothing came out, repeated it and still nothing but still a very on/off lame horse, turned her out as she looked sound, two days later she is very very lame, bought her into the stable and called the vet, vet is pretty sure it is laminitis as she is sore on all feet but the front right fore especially she was holding it out in front of her, vet thinks it could be cushings or navicular causing the laminitis so wants to do tests for all and X-rays, I do not have insurance and cannot really afford to spend out a fortune, she will have a blood test tomorrow for cushings but am still unsure as to whether to go ahead for X-rays. she is ok on her feet now as she is having 2 butes a day. If you read my previous posts you would see that my mare has had lots of problems with her legs/tendons in the past and at best without our recent problems she was just a light hacking horse coming back into work. What do you think is for the best?

Another issue I am having and the vet is confused about is that she is becoming dehydrated she is not drinking and not urinating, she has not drank or urinated since saturday.. the vet doesn't seem to be overly concerned as she is still alert/bright. She is having soaked hay twice a day but surely this cannot be enough water.

Sorry for the long post I just wondered if anyone had any ideas on both? I have tried warming the water up, putting apple juice in it, putting apples in it and will put some electrolytes in later

Thanks

Why not just treat her as a dietary laminitic for a couple of weeks and see what happens? Is you vet aware you are uninsured? His approach sounds rather like insurance milking to me :(

Far too soon to explore for navicular, ime, especially with sudden onset which is not characteristic.

I've never heard of navicular causing laminitis before, has anyone else on here??

Dont worry too much re the drinking, when they have soaked hay, they seem to get enough fluids from that alone ( my lad is the same and only when i have worked him quite hard does he drink)...It would be worth getting x rays just to see what exactly is going on in the feet, it doesnt cost a huge amount, I had it done too and am not insured...paid the vet off over 2 months as i didnt have the funds for a big outlay...the bloods will be a good indicator of PPID ( formerly known as cushings)..Dont give up just for financial reasons, it can be sorted if you have a good relationship with your vets and can pay over a period of time..best getting to the bottom of your horses problems and hopefully resolving them first.. If you need more info on PPID, please check out the laminitis site, it is full of helpful advice, incl x rays, diet, management etc.. Good luck

I no this is an old post, but what was the outcome of the horse not urinating??

My mare has laminitis (6th day of box rest) and the past 2 days she hasn't urinated much at all

Mine is on box rest with lami at the min and she has soaked hay. Hardly drinks much and only has one little wee in the day and one or two little wees over night shes had lami on and off since sept and always like it when shes box rested so wouldnt worry too much if they are still weeing

Thanks for your reply. She isn't drinking much but I'm not too worried about that seen as though she is also on soaked hay.
I'm only finding a few small wees, so she is still weeing, just not much
