a friend of mine is skint and cant afford her pony anymore, shes asked me if i would buy it off her , really cheap, but yeh he is a laminitus sufferer, other than that hes georgous hes only 14.2 white or grey boomproof in every way . any thoughts ive never had a laminitus horse b4

Depends how bad the lami is - I used to ride a lami prone pony, she didn't suffer at all - starvation paddock in summer, in at nights, happy-hoof in winter, sometimes a week or two of lameness in spring, but never more then that.

How much is the pony selling for?

No; having lived through the nightmare of a pony suffering from this awful disease, I'd definitely not knowingly buy one who has it.

Personally I wouldn't! If you are still tempted, you need to find out whether he has had more than one attack and how he was being managed at the time of attacks. You also need to ask yourself whether you have the facilities to keep stabled and/or in a starvation paddock if necessary. Some ponies are naturally much more susceptible to laminitis than others, and can still have attacks whilst carefully managed. Others may have an underlying cause such as Cushings which can lead to recurrent attacks even when not on grass.

as long as you manage the laminitus it will be fine.
My mare has had laminitus and she had it really bad...she has not had it for 10 years through good management.
If I didnt have the time to exercise her I would lunge her for 1/2 every other day and limited her grass...muzzles are always helpful and she has been fine.
She is out on loan now and is doing really well - the people know she can be a laminitic but are managing it well.
As long as you read up about it and know about it, what to watch and look for you should be fine.

Yes. Ive had/have many who ive bought with laminitis and some who ive bought without... and not been told theyd had lami previously.

However... if you dont have experience with dealing with laminitics.. then a huge resounding NO.
Its not something you can mess around with, we've lost one to laminitis and its one of the most heartbreaking times of my life.

Nothing is for free in this life I'm afraid. If this pony gets a bad bout of acute laminitis then you should be prepared for a very large vet bill; somewhere in the thousands of pounds mark.

Make sure that you can get insurance BEFORE you take the pony is my advice.

Has the pony got laminitis at the moment? If so, how bad is it? Have you got the facilities at your yard, and the time, to cope with a laminitic?
Has your friend got an outstanding vet's bill that she would expect you to pay?

yes - if you can manage him correctly you should be able to get him to have a happy life and no more lammi bouts. I bought one 2 years ago knowing she was a lammi sufferer. With careful managedment she had her first years with out lammi.

I would have to concider why she is geting lammi first.

A pony i had for a while had lammi regularly before i got him, however he was horrificaly obese and grazed on dairy pasture. I got him, dropped the weight off him over winter and put him out on my field which wasnt as rich, and he didnt get a single bout of it in the time we had him (about 2 years).

Ive got one at the moment who has been on the same diet and the same field for 10 years, he had his first bout of lammi last year. vet was called, turned out it was cushings induced lammi as nothing else could have triggered it.
