Has anyone ever had this issue. My pony is insulin resistant and is taking Metformin. Seems to be doing ok. However during the laminitus bouts he has had v bad muscle spasms. Physio thinks to do with the toxins from the laminitus. Vet says no way, but cannot come up with a reason for spasms. Muscle biopsy was inconclusive. The spasms are getting better with masage and whilst taking Metformin!

So sorry to hear you and your pony are going through this.

My horse was diagnosed with laminitis last March, we had a couple of episodes of touch and go but she has pulled through. My mare's was brought on by very rich hay and she was totally box rested for 5months on bute and sedalin.

Jackie from the http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheMetabolicHorse/ is very good and will be a great help.

I wonder if the muscle spasms could simply be from your pony holding himself differently because of the laminitis, they probably have to use muscles that they didn't know they had before and I can imagine this would cause some cramping? I second contacting Jackie Taylor, she really knows her stuff on metabolic issues.

As per touchstone's response...could be something as simple as that or just being boxed in for so long? Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Thanks guys. Either way, I am of the opinion that the muscle prob is linked too the laminitus. Unfortunatly my vet won't have it which means I have two claims going on and so two £150 excess's to pay.

Squirrel also came down with this bout whilst stabled on hay. he had been in for a week because of the snow with turn out in the school and exercise on the walker. This is why I insisted on the tests because normal laminitus does not come on from hay. The dynamic glucose test showed up the Insulin resistance, which means that he is pumping ou insulin to counter act the sugar, but is not able to utilise it. This will damage the pancreas in time. Hoping the Metformin works. He is going out now with a muzzle and seems to be fine

I heard of a case recently where a horse was on box rest and got lami on hay. Do you soak yours to get the sugar out ? What else do you feed ?

Yes soaking hay for 30 mins. We feed the lowest sugar feed available which is a chaff with a few little nuts. its Dengie hi fi mollases free and is only 2% sugar. We feed this mainly to put his vits and tablets in.

We found out that the chaff they had been using at the yard was 10.9% sugar...........

Just had a re test for the insuling resistance. Last results were 900 (should be 85) now 400. Have increased the meforming to 6 tablets twice per day. was on 4 twice per day. At least it is going down.:)
