Hi all,
You may have seen my thread regarding mineral licks, i have found a brand name Laminshield by Rockies selling licks for laminitis prone horses and ponies, i basically wanted a lick she could have in her stable or while i was grooming her that doesn't hang up (she has a boredom breaker, but doesnt quite understand the idea of it!, bless her)
I've been looking at buying the 5kg one and it comes in a cardboard box like a MacDonalds happy meal! But i was wondering whether it was in a tub or not as it doesn't say? As ideally i'd like it to be in a tub.
I was wondering if any of you have had one of the Licks and of so would you reccomend it? Good value for money and how long it took your horse to get through?!
Thank you!

Hi, I bought one & my boy hasnt touched it! It's not in a tub but quite heavy so you could stick it in a tub trug or feed skip and it wouldnt go anywhere. I've left it hanging up and he never goes near it but opts for his salt lick instead. I wouldn't buy another.

Ps. They smell of sick too!

Thank you! I might just stick to a normal salt lick as they are quite bloomin expensive! And my pony is very fussy! Will get a cheap Himalayan salt lick instead! As it would of cost me bout £20 in total!
The ony reason i looked at it was because she's had laminitis in the last and thought it would help, but not if she doesn't like it,
I did look at the 2kg one but it still works out about £13 opposed to £3 for a standard salt lick.
Thanks for your help.

Mine all love it! You just hang up. I even hang mine outdoors its good in all weathers.

The thing with min licks is.... if they dont need it, they wont lick it.

I had my forage tested so I know they needed it. I also use Rockies 5 Star which goes down well... I swap laminshield in the spring/summer and start the 5 star in the autumn.

My pony doesn't quite understand the idea of "hanging things" so her Likit ball just sits there as she doesn't know what to do! Bless her:D
I will have a look at 5 star Rockies one now.
I was going to get her a small Horslyx tub (650g) that way i could feed it in hand or she can eat it while i'm grooming, but underneath it said *See feeding guidelines for laminatics* so now i'm not sure! I was only going to get her the original flavor, but now i'm not sure!

I bought one when I had an old laminitic pony, she never touched it and it eventually crumbled away. I used the sachets too, can't say I noticed any improvement/difference.

I tried a normal sized lamishield lick on mine being a good doer a few summers ago and he wouldn't touch it - they do smell odd. He also turns his nose up at Himalayan salt licks so it's the bog standard cheap Rockies horse licks and they do him well :) He obviously likes his salt native and natural.

Thank you everyone! i'm now trying to find a salt lick in a tub! or possibly the horslyx original one!

Erm... horselyx mollassed licks? For a laminitic? ok............

Look, you can lead a horse to a lick but you can't make him lick it so.... buy a vit/min supplement you can add in. Like anything, introduce in small amounts, don't just dollop 25g straight in and say "eat that".

Minerals alone will not prevent laminitis. If you want to know if your horses diet is balanced, test your forage. Always. Then you may not even need to buy extra minerals you don't need that collect dust in the corner because the pony wont lick it.

There is no point in spending that much on a lamisheild lick if you then also continue with lickits or horselyx. Both are stuffed full of sugar. If you are worried about Lami dump the sugar laden licks first!

This!

You can get a blue Rockies mineral salt lick which is the high magnesium one, good for lamis, if you get the agricultural sized one it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper per gram than buying their horse specific one which is much smaller.

Or just use the yellow Rockies, general vit and min one.

The one not to use is the red one as it is high in copper and only used for cattle (if horse needs a bit of extra copper after analysis of feed and forage this should be a measured amount, the block could result in harmful overdose..

Nothing like Horselyx / molassed stickiness in tubs should be anywhere near anything thats had lami.....

I do not feed likits anymore as she does not like them, and have never tied horsylx(i'm not even eintirly sure if it was this brand just what i think based on what i've herd)
