Or whatever the real name is.
Are there any alternatives to stop my dog licking his wound?
I was thinking of making something donut shaped to go round his neck, but was unsure if that would work.
The reason i ask is, he is'nt coping to well wearing the lampshade as he gets caught up on furniture, as it appears a bit big for him, but is the smallest they had at the vets, could i cut it down do you think, or would that make it sharp as it's plastic?
Any body used anything different??

Thanks,:)

Elizabethan collar:D they get called all sorts, buster collars, hoods, lampshades:D you can cut them, I usually cut the bigger ones and wrap co-form bandaging around the outsides to make less sharp, you can also buy alternative collars now, they make them in fabric, have a google under the elizabethan name and it will bring up a few alternatives.
In regard to using other methods really depends where the wound is.

Would a cat one do?, although they may be the same for cats and dogs? I had one for my awkward cat following spaying and that was fairly tiny. It worked very well but they're bloody awful things. Cat looked rather miserable!

I can recommend the comfy collars. My bitch had a couple of mammary lumps removed 2 weeks ago, was healing fine but she started licking the wound . I put a buster/lampshade collar on her and she freaked out big time, ripping open the wound. She has now been stapled up and is wearing a comfy collar. Although she doesn't like it she is quite calm, just sits looking a bit depressed.:( I think if she really tried she could turn and get at the wound but so far she hasn't bothered.

How about a baskerville muzzle, its what we use. Dog can still pant and drink and they have full vision - plus as a bonus you don't get the scratch mark at dog height around your walls where they've been trying to get the flaming lampshade off!

Cheers guy's, he's just been de-plumed, (castrated),
I will look into the comfy collar thing, or go back to the vet monday and see if they have a cat lampshade.

Would,nt he still be able to lick himself??

ok so here goes(and please don't laugh!!)..........we used an old pillowcase and put four holes in for his legs and attached it to his collar............he looked stupid but it really worked, told a colleague at work she did the same and it worked.

No laughing in this corner -friends have used old kids T-shirts before :D Get one with Power Rangers on it, for extra amusement :D

He is quite a small dog, so do you think if i cut up some tubigrip to fit around him, that would work, or would that iratate??

I've used a t shirt before and it worked. Tried one on Saffy but she chewed a hole in it :p I would be wary of tubigrip, it might grip a bit too tight and cause irritation, and also heat up the wound which is never good.

I did wonder wether it would iratate, so.. i am going to try a new born baby vest with poppers tonight, i may take photo's

I am a wicked person!!

I tried a sock with leg and tail holes before i had to resort to lampshade on cat. It was appsolutly hilarous, she looked like she had a wooley jumper on. Unfortunatly she got it off
