Hi all. I'm looking in to getting a 4X4 to tow two 15.2hh horses once I've passed my towing test. As i'm only 19 i'm finding it very difficult to find 4x4s that i can get insured on. The defender so far seems to be the only one. Does anyone have one? Whats it like to tow? I will be getting a 2nd hand one so how much on average do you think it costs to get it through its MOT, how much to tax and whats the feul eccomony like?

Finally are there any other 4x4, that arn't to expensive to buy 2nd hand that I could get insured on?

Thanks all!

Landrover Defenders are THE BEST!

I'm afraid i can't give you info on the running costs as I've never actually owned one personally, my parents had a long wheel base when I was younger and I had a 1995 swb on loan for a while for my trailer. Fuel consumption didn't seem that bad...

Pulling power-wise you hardly know there's a trailer attached but they are noisy and possibly not the most comfortable but for kudos, you can't beat them, IMHO.

Be careful re corrosion and spare parts can be costly on older models but I would have one in a flash

I have a defender. It toes brilliantly,,with a defender you will not get anywhere fast but you will get there.Towing wise i tow a Ifor 511 with two heavyweights onboard and you would not know the trailer is there. My last service cost £400 but that was including having a anti-roll link and two universal joints fitted.Uj's are quite common to go on the defenders unless you keep them greased up.Mine always flys through the mot and it cost £53.Road tax is £185 for 12 months.Fuel economy is not the best if you tow alot it will drink alot but just cruising around i get about 26-28 to the gallon. My pride and joy.

Another post here pro Defender. I LOVE mine, always wanted one since I could drive at 17 and 17 years late I have one. I have two HW cobs and the Defender doesn't even struggle up hills. I'm following Rema's lead here and putting up a pic:-

My pride and joy :-)

i have a defender 110 double cab pick up and love it - here she is my pride and joy Bambi:

weve had one exactly the same model on 06 plate but it got nicked in January but loved it so much we wanted to get the same style. plus we had a 90 a good few years ago. personally i think they are the best.
mine is a 57 plate and the consumption is roughly 24mpg when towing my Equitrek trailer so it isnt bad at all - even has a 6th gear so is great when on straight runs. Even when my trailer is fully loaded at 3.5t you hardly seem to notice the its ont he back on the defender.
cost wise of servicing, we havent had this one serviced yet as only had it 6months but last one cost roughly £250. Road tax is £185

How sexy is that Landy?!

I've wanted one of these ever since I first learnt to drive, very jealous now. Damn things hold their value so well that I can't even afford an old rusty one.

That is a lovely example, and the best colour.

Rims ... hmmmm I'm a numpty, do you mean wheels?? They're 17" black sport alloys with Mickey Thompson ATZ tyres (so says my bf). The only other thing we did is black out the back windows. When it went in for it's post-purchase 30 day check the guys at the garage we bought it from were well impressed! It looks very nice in front of my black IW trailer but I keep saying to BF that it would look much nicer in front of a NEW one!!!

Thank you! I only have mine due to my lovely fiance!! He bought it for me back in April (how great is he?)

I love it and I'm never ever selling it. I hope to be still driving it when I'm an OAP lol

got to agree with you Rema - very nice landy. i even tried to convince mum we didnt need the pick up so i could have this one (defender SVX - bit of a show off one though i think dont you? not really practically for yard work)

That is VERY nice, when my fiance bought mine for me there was one like that in the showroom but was mega expensive (and like you say not very practical for yard work!)

I was lucky enough to get a (K reg the first time round!

) defender when I passed my test - dad said if i hit anything at least it wouldn't break! He wasn't far wrong - i didn't hit anything but it never needed anything more than basic work to pass MOT's.

they aren't fast, but they are tough and determined!!

I'd love another one really, but the disco is a good alternative.
