Has anyone got a Discovery which they use for towing. I am looking for a new towing vehicle and a nice black one with leather interior sounds lovely, esp with privacy windows. Are they reliable as I have a Shogun at the minute and that has been pretty good. Are they quite thirsty?
I presume that they are the dogs dinner for towing???
Thanks

I love "Betsy" my Disco - really old girl (J reg) and done 85k in mileage but pulls up any hill you face it with, also brill for harrowing the menage with, about 25-28 to the gallon in mine I think? Is any one else daft enough to call their car a name

Discovery is more economical than the Shogun, but of course more likely to go wrong. Both Troggy and OH have one, so we are big fans - even though OH's (much newer!) one decided to switch itself off on the M6 last week. All mended now *touches wood frantically* Still, it is the most comfortable place to sit whilst waiting for the RAC!

(Which we didn't have to do, it did restart...)

We had a 3.9 V8i petrol Disco with a LPG conversion,It towed like a train but it was a high mileage and cost a packet to be kept on the road,But in all fairness it was the LPG that cost the money it had been installed okay but was set up wrong. When you put your foot down it would backfire BIG TIME and blow the air filter cover off of the engine.I would have a disco again no problems but never again have a LPG car.We have a Landy Defender now and i love it!.

I LOVE my Disco Daisy, she tows easily and is a joy to drive. I had a Shogun Pinin before and the Disco is more economical than that was. Shogun was petrol and Disco is Diesel. Mine is silver with black leather and privacy glass and I think looks the dogs danglys!!! The only downside is that my mares white hairs show on the black leather and carpet

Well recommended though, I would not swap her.......well maybe for a Range Rover Sport

We have a beaten up old Disco (I say we, actually it belongs to my OH but I comandeer it for towing LOL).

It tows great, even with an Ifor Williams and two horses on the back going up steep hills, never hesitates and just keeps on trucking.

I love Discos, they are my favourite 4x4s.

A friend of mine has a disco, however it only has a 2.6 litre engine (or somewhere round there) it pulls lovely untill we get to hills and then it struggles a bit with one horse (big though) and a ifor.
However friend says that she has towed with the 2.8 litre disco and it was much much better.

Thanks for all your replies.
I have only found 2.5TD so far, is it the TD5??? I will have a look for a 2.7 or 2.8 then if they make them. My Shogun is a 2.8TD and I think that it would struggle a little going uphill with 2 big horses on it it were 2.5L, but someone has told me that the 2.5 LR Disco is more powerful than the 2.5 shogun!
decisions, decisions!!!

I think you'll find the 2.5 TD5 has far more "grunt" than the Shogun when towin It's not the cc that is the biggest issue but the power it produces and the gear ratios. Plus the Disco TD5 is a 5 cylinder rather than the 4 in most diesel 4x4's - makes a bit of difference. All Disco's have been 2.5 litre diesels. The first engines (known as the 200 and then the 300 series) were 4 cylinder. Then came the 2.5 TD5 5 cylinder and now you have the nwere version which is a 6 cylinder 2.7 in the diesel.
