What are the chances of a 8hh randy shetland stallion succesfully covering a 14.3hh tarty mare? feeling a bit sick atm ! The hedges were all cut along the boundary of the field, and the horrid creature managed to get from next door field to our field through the middle of the barbed wire in the hedge. Found it following my buckskin mare like a shadow and squealing, she was just happily letting him stay next to her. I know it's unlikely, and he's never managed to cover the 10hh Shetland mare next door, but I've heard of stranger things and it could be possible she lay down. He's always tried to get to her since she moved to the yard about 3 years ago but never managed until now.

I've heard you can get an injection to re-absorb a potential foal , anyone know the cost or side effects of this ? Would you think it was worth it? I really don't want a shetland x foal.. and I'd never dream of breeding from my mare anyway as she is not the best put together and can be a cow :o

Speak to your vet. Its better to have a jab just in case, than assume he wouldn't find a way to cover the mare, though it does seem unlikely.
We have injected cows before when 'got' by their randy young sons! Or when the bull has caught a young heifer who has been in with him while Mum cow has been waiting on his services! In the cow case the injection just brings them back into heat so any foetus is re-absorbed/discarded. There will be a time limit though so don't leave it too long.

Is she in season, if not and just being generally tarty and happy he was with her then you have little to fear, I think at 8 hands he really would struggle to reach and although it is possible she would get down it is unlikely unless she was well in season and ready for him.
I would be sorting out the fencing so there is more than a hedge between them as he will probably be more keen to come through again and if she likes him she may try and get through.

she is not so tarty as she was when she was younger (now 12), so it's hard to tell. But i haven't seen her "displaying" to him. Have already sorted fencing, in the heavy wind and rain ! Definitely not giving him another chance. I have the vet out in about a month for 2nd flu, but could move it forward as I think the flu can be given from this week. Don't think she will go through, she is not the bravest sort and avoids stepping over anything where possible, just a sickening thought of what would result in a horrible shetland x ugly mare !

If she wasn't showing to him when you found them you should be safe, she may well come into season in the next few days as being with him may well bring her on, I would speak to the vet about a jab if you are still worried, nothing worse than an unwanted foal, especially from what sounds an awful cross.
