Hi all.

As i have now decided, after advice from ROG, thank you, an estate car will prob get stuck in grassy ground etc, so im going to have to go for a landrover and a trailer.
What mpg can i expect from towing a ifor 505 and 1 550kg horse.
Will only really be local shows, within 20ish miles of home.

And should i really stick to an older landrover, ive heard post r reg are the ones to steer clear of?

Thank you

I have an R reg 300tdi and an Ifor 505 with a horse around the same weight as yours. I don't do a huge amount of towing but my mpg averages 30 - a bit more on long journeys but less when I tow.

You just have to be prepared for big repair bills and high servicing costs.

I drive my Disco because I enjoy it and it tows like a dream, but it is not the cheapest option by any means.

Not much - but if you are only using it for towing, does it matter that much? There is no such thing as an economical 4 x 4 towing vehicle and if you are not using it for a daily commute to work then it is just added on to the cost of owing the horse. When you need the extra grip it is well worth it though.

Beware that Land Rover models/engines differ. Look up Honest John on the Telegraph website, which has a pretty detailed library of makes and models and things to look out for and which models to avoid.

Although parts for LRs are easy to get, the older the vehicle the more likely you are to need a friendly local mechanic.

Umm I've only just see this thread, but have started one of my own threads saying how much I am disliking my discovery at the moment! Endless problems...apparently defenders are good though

Defenders were built for serious off road use, have better running gear and better made, discoveries were made with the yuppie market in mind so they could drive up a kerb on the school run!!

Personally these days I will stick to Japanese.

Kia if I was to swap or a jeep...... Disco filled up at st. Michael woods service station with trailer. Carried on o Bath, picked up pony and fed rove hometowns Worcester. Fuel gauge between full to 3/4 ..... Not bad

Brilliant response..thanks peeps.

I only travel 5 miles to work n the yard is only a mile from my house so not a huge distance covered when not towing

Have you thought about a new shape freelander?

I have a late 2007 free lander 2. I have a Ifor W 510 (the large one, weighs about 1000k unladen) and I have a 16.2h TB weighing 560kg.

It tows up to a limit of 2000kg (fine for horse plus pony) and I he about 25-30mpg when towing, and 35+ when driving about normally.

A lot of people slate them but I've had mine for 12 months now and really rate it. It's a bit of a compromise in that you can't tow two big horses but better car for your budget and better mpg.

My dislike of discos is widely noted on here! I would never have another due to the fact that it never lasts longer than 3 months without breaking down & have spend more than I bought it for (£8k) on repairs over the last 7yrs :( I've signed it over to my oh now as he seems to always want to persevere with it & I've bought myself an old Toyota Landcruiser which I'm over the moon with :) just need to get a towbar fitted now ;)
