Considering buying an old landrover defender 90, are there any specific models/engines better than others? Also what sort of price should I expect to pay for an H/J/K reg in reasonable condition?

Thanks

Friend of mine has one for sale at £1500ish. Mechanically sound, but has bucket seats (I love them, I understand if others don't though

) and no PAS due to age.

He can acquire most years and models cheaply if you want something at mate of mate's rates?

Sorry to hijack your post but would a landrover defender pull a ifor williams with two 16.hh horses?

I have an L200 but don't really like towing both with it..seems very light on the back end without weights in the back and then I am nearing towing capacity.

I also have a LR 90, the 110's are harder to manouvre with a trailer. Mine tows my Bateson but I only carry a pony. Might be worth a visit to the Landrover Show if you are near Eastnor Castle, sorry cannot remmeber date. there is a newish Landy dealer in Droitwich Worcs and they have second hand ones on offer, best of luck .

(My Landrover does not leak oil it is just marking it's spot !).

ooooh my favourite subject.
the 300tdi is better than the 200tdi but more expensive. On a ~G/H/K reg that year will be a 200tdi which are good but not as good as newer models, however a 200tdi is much better than a early 2.5 diesel non turbo or pre 200tdi 2.5td. If you want a cheaper but well serviced vehicle then you will be well advised to buy a x-mod landrover. The 90's are easier to manoeuver than the 110's but for long distance towing the 110 is the better vehicle.

Dannylandrover. There is a landrover "do"on at Eastnor this weekend. The nationals.60th anniversary of the landrover. There will be landrover trials on sat, sun, mon,i should think there will be stalls etc,and there will be lots, and lots of landrovers and landrover loving people, including my parents and sister! who will be more than happy to talk "landrover"

For towing you are best off with a Diesel Long wheel Base Landrover.

Get at least a 6 cylinder engine.

Points to check over are the rear chassis member and bulk head for rust.

24 Volt ones are the most reliable for starting.

Free wheeling hubs on the front and an electric fan will save you fuel.

We have the cheapest landrover option going short wheel base with Ifor Williams back on it. Its a 54 plate but they hardly depreciate. Its amazing to tow with and we regularly stick two big horses up and it tows really well. As you know I travel all over the area in it and its pretty economical with one up. We used to have a C reg one and it was dreadful could not tow a paper bag and had no power steering.

The other thing we had was Daihatsu 4 Trak and that towed really well.

Just sold my landie 200tdi defender Kreg, 115,000miles, M&T lots of checkplate, lots service records - 2k. Most important thing with landie is to have someone who will regularly maintain it (hubby did mine). I had 3 door, short wheel base, brilliant for towing and stuff all gg stuff around, ace off road

I would avoid any with many electrical crap on as it goes wrong. If you go for old one, be sure and you take good mechinic along, look at bulk head for welding, welding on chasis aswell, make sure gearbox has been sort cos they go about 110,000 miles, Make sure heater works. Thing to remember with them is that the parts are cheap BUT it's the labour costs to fix them...
BUT main thing with them is
That things do fall off, stop working then start again... but I always smiled when driving mine loved it... BUT they ain't a modern vehicle!
