Putting a land drain in our field but can only buy geotextile in quantities much much larger than I need and for a lot more than I would like to spend! I can buy landscape fabric in a length that is more suitable for much less. Question is can I use it in the drain? I am back filling the drain with pea gravel and then soil on top which is thick and clay like.

Answers on a postcard please :) hoping to do this today or at least make a good start!

I'd say no. Why don't you try ringing a couple of local civil engineering companies, they may have some scraps you can have.

Or if there is a local building site why not go and ask them?

Can I ask you both why you think the landscape fabric wouldn't be suitable? I understand they are obviously each made for a specific job but the landscape stuff is still designed to keep soil etc out and let water through?

I know it's not ideal but?!!

It will break down in a few years, and it lets weeds through. The goetextile is a sort of sprayed material, it is much tougher.

Thanks, I went with your suggesting in the end. Managed to get it a bit cheaper from a different builders merchants and hopefully I can sell on the stuff I don't use. Don't want to have to do the job again in a years time that's for sure!

P.S pea gravel is rather small, rounded and expensive, for drainage I think you really need something larger and coarser so there are lots of drainage channels, the builders merchant will advise.

Too late I've already installed it! I call it pea gravel but the stones were actual a bit larger and cost me a fiver in total for the whole drain, cheap as chips! But thanks anyway :)
