The 5th edition of the world's longest and toughest horse race has a winner: Lara Prior-Palmer.

- The first British rider to take first place
- The youngest ever winner (20)
- First ever female victor

There was a dramatic, gut-wrenching twist right at the line though. First across the line Devan Horn received a 2 hour penalty when her horse's heart rate didn't recover in the required time so when Lara Prior-Palmer crossed the line 1 hour later and passed her vet check she was declared the winner of the 2013 Mongol Derby. Here's our winner crossing the line.

Friend of mine was riding but had to withdraw near the end, disappointed for her but she did so well anyway.

Congratulations to the winner, it's not a ride i'd fancy doing :p

YES! It looks such a tough, long race...I watched the series on Horse and Country with the couple of guys doing it a year or two ago. But this year the first FIVE finishers were women! Fab.

What a great result, although I am somewhat disturbed that the first horse over the line did not have a low heart rate in time allowed.

Is there any video footage on line?

L P-P was interviewed by Nick Luck, yesterday on Ch4 Racing. What a good girl and such fun too. She bucks the trend towards youthful apathy. She didn't take herself too seriously, and she was confident without being arrogant. Impressed!

Alec.
