im looking to buy some of the large bales of straw and haylege for my horse as the little bales are costing me too much. Just wondered if anyone could suggest anywhere? I live in chesterfield, derbyshire.

Thanks for your help.

from what i see,it makes no difference to the price.
hay/straw is £xxxx per tonne,so probably works out the same price

Try your local farmers, especially the ones who you saw harvesting in the summer!!

I used to get my straw and hay / haylage in big bales and it was cheaper for the bigger bales!!

Yes if you bulk buy its a set amount per tonne but its £500 + for a lorry load which I am sure you aren't wanting that much if you are a one horse owner... if you do want a lorry load then google search for local hay and straw merchants... if you can collect they might even be able to help you anyway and just let you have a few bales!!

Disagree girwolds.. is £xx per ton from market.

If buying for a middle person, then it is DEFINATLY cheeper to buy large bale. at the moment it costs me £25 per 6 week for hayleage (6 sharing and bale lasts a week) if i was buying singularly i would be using about £12 a week!!!!

well, around here,if you buy a big bale it works out about the same price as if you buy the same amount in little bales.

Might be worth trying the South Wingfield Riding Club too as a lot of their members live around the Wingerworth. North Wingfield and Chesterfield areas...so they might know. Go on the BHS website and look for them...they are an affiliated riding group listed there.

Hmm, are you feeding just one horse? A large bale of haylage lasts me about 4 days for 8 neds who get haylage in their stables and hay on the field. Once opened the haylage will be fine for about a week in this cold weather. Make sure you can use the haylage before it starts to go off, otherwise you'll be no better off than buying small bales.

Buy a copy of the admag on sat, loads of hay etc in there and some haylage i rang for at the weekend was your way(chesterfield), i got some more local to me though through word of mouth.

What about Eurobale in Nottingham - might be minimum quantitiy orders though?

I use a half big bale haylage, I have one horse and it lasts me nearly a fortnight - I have never had a problem with it going off.
It is costing me slightly more per month than feeding small bales around £5 which is nothing in the scheme of things really.
