Hi

I have got a shire horse, who before I got him this week, had an accident within the last month, leaving him with around a 4 or 5 inch wound on this back leg, just below the bum. It was very swollen, and he has had a course of antibiotics, tetanus jabs, and is hibiscrubbed. Previous owners dont know what caused it, he isnt lame, doesnt bother him from what we can see, but it doesnt seem to be healing as the vet would expect it to.

The vets advised us to keep it cool, hose down, hibi and gave us some special spray. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? The vet said he thinks it has healed internally, just not the fleshy bits externally.

Is there any chance that there is still something 'foreign' in the wond? This would delay healing.

A good treatment for difficult healing wonds, infected wonds or questionable wonds that may have foreign matter in it, is green clay. It is applied on the wond area with about 1 cm thickness, left on for about an hour and then rinse off, any clay remaining in the wond is left as is, after about an hour repeat the treatment by again applying the clay, leave on for an hour and then rinse off ... normally in the 2nd application the wond-clay automatically is removed by the rinsing. This usually will take out all pus and other nasties and leave the wond and its edges nice and clean thus helping with quickened healing.

This is the clay I always use and can highly recommend: Vertargil (http://www.dierinbalans.nl/PDF/Leem.pdf) ... unfortunately in Dutch but on page 6 the different products can be viewed.
