Large Munsterlander

My sister has one in the USA he’s a gorgeous dog. He’s trained as a “bird dog” and hunts, points and retrieves although since her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident he hasn’t done much. He’s full on but was very trainable and not at all aggressive. They have a place with a couple of acres he and her other dog spend a lot of time digging holes looking for moles and ground hogs. He was castrated late as he started marking, it was after her husband died. He makes me laugh as he sings for his supper, I’ve never heard anything like it.He normally does this when we’re talking over messenger ?.
 
a friend of mine has 2 and they are lovely dogs but need to be kept occupied, both brain and body. she does agility with them and also shows them, they are very friendly with people and other dogs but hers do get lots of stimulation and exercise as she doesnt work so has the time...
 
my friends dont behave like springers, but they are quite a bit bigger, more like german shephard size, at least hers are. you may be thinking about the smaller ones, they are more like the size of springers . my friend ended up buying a freelander 2 as they grew out of her estate car so the smaller ones may be easier to cope with

I have known a few and they do need to be kept mentally and physically stimulated. They are a hunt, point, retrieve breed so much more like a GSP or Weimaraner in temperament than a spaniel. The ones I know can be rather noisy and bark a fair bit. If you want to speak to someone experienced in the breed please let me know as I know one of the breed rescue coordinators
 
There used to be one that lived opposite my livery yard, it’s owners let it run free range up and down the lane all the time. Quite a sweetie and good with the horses (luckily!) but they clearly need a lot of mental stimulation ?

ETA - oh yes, it barked. A lot. All the time. Nearly as much as George....?

Have just spoken to my sister and he’s apparently a small Munsterlander but he’s bigger than others of his breed. He’s definitely a lot bigger than a springer even though he’s “small”. Large Munsterlanders must be massive if he’s a small one!
 
I have had good and bad experience of them.
There was one in my gun dog training class, he was absolutely lovely, very well trained and could do all the exercises my flatcoat could do. Worked to the whistle, retrieve etc and good with other dogs. He was nothing like a spaniel in temperament, none of the constant wiggling and buzzy behaviour. He was taller and slimmer than my retriever. He was very well handled and disciplined which I think the HPR breeds need .
My bad experience was one that lived on a farm near me and was much more left to his own devises. His temperament was distinctly dodgy and I didn’t trust him with people or dogs except those in his own family.

Size
Height: dogs: 60-65 cms (23.5-25.5 ins); bitches 58-63 cms (23-25 ins).

My two are 22 inches to the withers, so barely any difference.
 
The ones I know (they’re popular in caniX) are all a fair bit bigger than a spaniel- they’re more flat coat in height than labrador, bigger than the German pointers and dalmations, similar to Weimies. Maybe there’s a difference between show and working strain. That said your spaniels are massive :p Mines pretty big for a working strain at 18 inches. The ones I know are ‘properly’ worked (caniX) and owned by very experienced trainers so hard to make a judgement- all their dogs are perfect :p

They're ridiculously big. Even as puppies, they were massive. They’re 9 weeks in this photo, my OH is quite well built, 6”1 and they look huge! They’re only about 25kg, tho, I reckon it’s all leg!

I don’t have a picture of Zak standing up with next door’s shepherd, who was a huge specimen, despite being a bitch, I’ll see if I can find a picture of puppy Zak with her.

I finally got round to measuring the boys today.... awwww, your GSDs are tiny ?

Marty is 27” and Ace is 31” at the shoulder.... oh and George is 12” ?

Theoretically Marty is the ‘correct’ size and Ace is over height.... but he isn’t a KC bred dog of course so he is exempt from that nonsense.....bloody oversized pet dogs again.... ??

One is correct and one undersized here lol.
 
I've shot over a few in trials. Nice dogs, on the more scatty/busy end of the HPR spectrum with Weims/Vislas. Most I've seen are Jaudas bloodlines
