Large round bale of hay advice please - getting the hay off the roll?

So - today was the day of opening up the round bale!

I've left it on its side as there is about a 50/50 split of people doing side or end. And it seems to come off quite easily - no scratching to find an end - I was quite surprised. I managed easily to get enough off in small layers (armfuls) into a big bag to feed mine loose out in the field. And only pulled off from one side. Tomorrow I'll pull from the other side. I cut the net off at floor level and started pulling off layers from the bottom and evenly across the bale. So far so good!

Thank you all, I was worried I'd made a mistake in getting these bales. I can see how much messier it would be on it's end falling off the bale. On it's side it cannot fall off until you pull it off. If its this easy all the way through then I'd definitely place it on it's side for other bales!
