Can anyone recommend a make of saddle pad for a GP saddle which comes up fairly large? My latest Lemieux is short and very forward cut so doesn’t really suit my GP. Looking for an everyday type one so nothing that will break the bank. Saddle is 17.5 inches and horse is a big 17h type so would like something that doesn’t look like a miniskirt on her!

Mattes, L or XL, they publish their measurements, and make a basic numnah/square for roughly the same prices as LM. Nicer shapes at the front and you can custom order thousands of colour combos too, every pad is made to order (they make a small selection of standard pads for shops to carry but they're very limited).

Latest le mieux my share horse wore rubbed his skin sore! So that won’t be used again I hope. Always like nuumed are they still going?

I bought a Numed at Xmas. I have an XL saddlepad for my 18'' forward cut GP for my 17hh Percheron/arab. Good fir, very pleased with it.

Echo Mattes. I also have a HKM which just fits an 18" saddle, you couldn't go any bigger and a horse dreams/Christ sheepskin one which fits, doesn't have any trim at the back which helps.

I have just orderd a nuumed saddle pad after taking delivery of a large LM one and finding it a lot shorter than the sheepskin half pad I have! Same as the colour is nice. Their measurements made it look longer than the one I am currently using (Shires I think) but comparing them in the flesh they are no different. I don't want the half pad to hang over the back of the saddle pad, which it does at the moment. Have ordered L and XL as was not sure which one to get!

You'd be more likely to get rubbing if you did, it's why half pads are tricky and I like half lined pads/numnahs, so much easier in terms of fitting, just a bit more care!

It is rubbing a bit as it is (the edge of the current saddle pad), I'm hoping having a saddle pad that is longer than the half pad will stop that. Unless you are saying it would be worse?

No, I mean you need to have the square pad longer than the half pad, as you're planning, just that half lined pads are easier than using this combo. I will warn that with some shapes of topline a very long pad, accommodating that half pad, may hit a part of the slope to the croup that means it'll rub anyway. Half pads are often much longer than they need to be because everyone wants the trim on top and most makers do nothing else but it means going up a size to stop the saddle panels sitting on the trim. Mattes you can select trim front, rear, both or none, and it means you can use a smaller size. Good with shorter backs!
