I used to be on a small yard - v friendly tho facilities minimal.

Now on large yard, good facilites, bit impersonal. And still can't find a helper/sharer!

Be interested to know everyone's experiences of small/large yards...

must like small as altia & i are about to rent our own for our neddies

only been on a small yard -same one 8 years since I got my first horse! wouldnt consider a big yard as on our yard it isnt big enough for cliques to develop, and we are all adult 'bit of everything' ers or happy hackers - suits me (tho am just about to move to the Highland with the horses at home).

Dont think Im confident enough to hold my own in a big/competitive yard and also tho they sometimes have lots of lovely facilities, there always seems to be lots of people wanting to use them at the same time as you,......

Much prefer a small yard.... no one to stick their noses in or to bitch.

Was on a bigger yard last year, I liked the company but not the interference.

Only thing with smaller yard is not so much choice of hacking partners..... but then again, if I hack on my own I can at least pull up when I want to!!!!

Only thing I find with being on a small yard(6 people) is that veryone tends to know everyones business-good or bad! Cant decide if I would like a bigger yard or not...

Prefer the new small yard just me one other and the owner. The last yard was big and run by the liveries, too many chiefs not enough indians.

I always thought I would prefer small yards, but I love the one Im on now, which has over 60 equines. I find the YO much less interfering, and the other liveries much less nosy and bothersome (why would they bother boring little old me when theres loads of other people, hehe!). Also facilities are great and there is a lot of flexability if you need it.

Lots of people about throughout the day and always someone to help out when you are on holiday or whatever.

Our yard is however made up of several barns and areas of stables, so is more like 6 small yards on one estate! I suppose Im lucky too in that my barn is at the bottom of the yard so people tend to leave us alone, and its largely filled with quiet, older people who just get on with things.

I suppose in many ways I have the best of both worlds!

i have been on small, medium and large yard, i have recently left the large yard, and never again,as nice as some aspects were, i just love my new small yard, am so happy there, i liked my medium sized yard too but it had no riding/hacking,thats why i moved to large yard for the past year, but like i say i have just moved to a small yard which is being developed, but its still remaining a small yard, numbers will be no greater than 7 when its complete, enough not to be lonely and not enough for politics to be flaming annoying and making life miserable as has been the case in the past
small to medium sized yards all the way

We're currently on a big yard (50+ horses) with a riding school, and there's no problem with atmospheres or cliques, although it can be hard to find somewhere to ride, and free for alls in the indoor school are a bit hairy!
Our horse had been raised in a private home with two other horses, so all the activity blew her brains (she was 6 when we got her) and she was very difficult to handle for a few months. This is worth bearing in mind if moving from a small yard to a big yard.

Advantages are that there's lots for a horse to look at which helps when you go to shows, the yard organises clinics and competitions and the facilities are quite good.

But in spite of this, our horse is happier when we go to our trainer's smaller yard for a lesson, so we plan to move her shortly.
