I take my broken one out in hand - we snack & hack. Also play over poles in the arena so she's got something to use her brain for. If treats are involved then she's very trainable and it's fun to see her work stuff out

It's a shame retirement livery didn't work out but I think you'll enjoy having him back. E-riders are even offering in hand walk tests if you feel like a challenge over the summer. I think I might have a go

Well that’s a blooming change for a week!

I think he looks so tiny in the first one. Tbf he is standing a bit funny. But amazing difference, he couldn't have told me any clearer really

Glad you bought him home, it will also be nice for you to pamper him, the looking after was 75% of my enjoyment when I still had a horse, I enjoyed the riding but it’s the looking after I miss most.. he looks better already

It certainly cuts both ways. He's helping me too by being here again. I have something to look forward to now instead of going home to tv and bed by 6pm due to under stimulation of the body and mind!,

Why ever not! It’s none of the YO business whether a horse is ridden or not. I don’t think you are correct. If you mean that you have to pay full livery price for a retired horse well that’s different and of course YO should. Large the same as a ridden horse if you choose to retire your horse in a livery yard

Can't say I have ever been on a 'normal yard' that does not allow retired horses on it.

I can see that, if it's a professional trainer's yard and they make their money from training the liveries.

I had one tell me that they didn't do retirement livery but, on delving deeper, she meant that she valued her time and wasn't about to give dirt cheap livery. She was happy for me to pay full livery and take the lead, at full livery price.

I didn't end up taking it as I was just assessing my options.

Yes, there was no difference in charge for livery whether the horse was in work or not.

I would have kept him here at this yard in retirement and not bothered to send him away to a retirement yard but at the time I wasn't riding anything at all and was really struggling with this and seeing everyone else riding and going out having fun and I was left unable to ride for the umpteenth time as it so often the case with horses. And in the back of my mind I think I may have been pushed to 'just get on it and ride it' which I knew morally was wrong. But I also knew through comments made that some people felt the issues I was having was because he "was a competition horse" and "he's trying it on" and a inference that I'd overhorsed myself, which I knew wasn't the case at all as I'd seen the xrays and been thrown off violently and both pro riders had also struggled or found he was very reactive and would throw a hissy fit if asked to work in a certain way which was most definitely due to pain. He was very reactive as you can see from the photos.

The last couple of months I've been hacking out once a week on a horse nearby for a lady and this has helped considerably to scratch the itch, which is why I felt Lari could come back because I still have another horse to ride.

That probably doesn't make sense to many but having nursed two horses for the past five years with very little/no riding during that time I owed it to myself and my own MH to find a compromise if at all possible.
