Hi just curious if anyone has experience of laryngeal paralysis in a pony - I know it's most common in horses but I'm specifically interested to know of any ponies that have required a tie back operation and what was found to be the cause of the issue.

Me. She's 13h part bred Dales.

Had a hobday and soft palate cauterizing 2 years ago.

The floppy palate had likely been there since birth because I was told she was funny with a bit. I now ride in a hackamore. No idea about the rest. She'd had a foal and a year off before she came to me. I've seen a video from before she foaled and there's no sound of roaring.

Thank you. How was the recovery after the operation

4 weeks box rest. She was discharged with a huge hole under her neck - I obviously missed the part where the surgeon told me they didn't stitch it up to avoid infection.

Fortunately the weather was vile so lots of horses in during the day and she had a box with a view. Had to tape a towel on the top of her door to stop her scratching her neck though. Cleaned twice daily but healed quickly.

She then was turned out for a few weeks before the vet came to evaluate her on the lunge. She promptly bucked, farted and bogged off towing me around. Vet in hysterics saying she obviously feels better

Bitless has made a huge difference to the palate issue but with or without a bit there's been no more roaring. She couldn't do more than 15 mins without getting distressed but was happily hacking 5 miles in hot weather over the summer (she hurt her leg last winter so rehab hasn't been straightforward)
