My yearling had a puncture wound to his hind leg which caused a bone chip off his cannon bone. He had his 2nd x-ray a week ago and it showed that the bone had completely healed, however a lump has formed which is all bone. This is roughly the size of a grape.

The vets mentioned laser therapy could reduce the lump by up to 2/3rds and it would also involve him staying at the practise for a week to enable them to make a good attempt at reducing the lump.

I have two queries though, as he is just 13months old what is the likelihood of his growth absorbing a majority of the lump naturally?

Are there any side effects – i.e. scaring or loss of hair from this type of therapy?

I’m quite undecided what to do; I know it will not help him in the show ring or a sale point of view, but the lump is not causing him any trouble or pain so it’s purely down to being cosmetic.

Anyone had good results from this type of treatment?

Many thanks.

What laser? If they are going to use cold laser (infra red) then you can buy a machine off eBay to do this yourself. My OH made me a 3 diode one to use on a very severe tendon injury and it was marvellously effective. The treatment is very safe and not difficult, don't be frightened by the word "laser".

Even if you do nothing it will very likely reduce in size drastically over the next year. Things called, I think, oesophils eat away the excess over many months. Splints often reduce or disappear this way. BR linament also often helps a lot.
