Would it be daft to have a sarcoid lasered now in view of the flies? My vet and Newmarket are happy to go ahead but just wondered what owners thought who had had them done in the summer. Should I wait til autumn if poss?

Depends where it is I guess - my lad has recently had one removed on his chest so have invested in a fly rug for while it heals.

why is sarcoid being lasered as opposed to liverpool cream treatment? my horse needs treatment and lasering sounds a better option. thanks.

Lasering the sarcoids can leave great craters, depending on the size and position of them, which will attract flies.
Having done one at this time last year - we didn't have the luxury of waiting - it is easily managed by stabling the horse during the day and turning out at night.
The recovery period, whilst they heal, was longer than I had anticipated, but I suppose it depends on how many and how deep they cut.
If you can manage the wounds there is no reason not to do it now. If you can't - wait.

dawnsuth - going for lasering as the cream 'can' get onto other areas of the horse (his is on sheath so if he lies down etc it may get onto his leg. Plus apparently it is taking time to get the cream atm.

AML - Thanks for comment about craters......worrying but best to know what I'm in for. I am going to call Snuggy Hoods tomorrow as they are trialling a sheath protector so i could then go ahead with the op if that would really protect - he's out at night only anyway.

Can I reccommend F10 spray? It's anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and repels insects for days at a time. I used it on my boy boy after his sarcoid was removed surgically with good results. I also use it at work on fly strike rabbits with great success.

F10 spray looks excellent, thanks - I'll check with vets and have ordered the snuggy hood and sheath cover........maybe the op is on!

My boy's were treated with Liverpool cream in summer last year and I used Summer Fly Cream round the sites. Despite the lack of smell, it worked really well. It is a particularly virulent shade of luminous yellow, tho!
