Just had the vet out to look at a lump on my girls shoulder, he thinks its a sarcoid in a wierd place and as its winter her rugs would rub it all off so he wants to laser, does anyone have any experience of this? he said that she wont even really need any time off.

Than I got him to look at her hock which she had kicked last week as it still looked at bit swollen, he cant believe shes not lame ive been jumping and everything and she has been a angel I feel really guilty!

I had a horse who had 3 sarcoids lazered. He had one on his chest, one on his girth and one near his sheath. Now I wouldn't have bothered having them done if it hadn't been for the one on his girth area, and as I knew that had to be done I had them all done.

Anyway it was gross!! They burn them with the lazers so it just leaves you with proud flesh. It is better to do it in the winter as there are no flies but you then have the problem of rugging. Mine had to be on box rest, for the simple reason of not getting it dirty/infected or opening the wound.

In the end we had to use this great adhesive stuff with plaster in it to cover the areas so he could go out (he decided to take down his stable, all by himself!!) eventually the holes shrunk and scabbed over.

IMHO avoid lasering sarcoids, and go with liverpool cream. At the end of the day they are a cancer and laser probably stimulates them to grow even more!!!

I have a mare who had a horrible sarcoid just in front of her teats. This was lasered by Rossdales at Newmarket. She was my daughters jumping pony and had about 4 weeks off. This was in the summer of 2002. She is now expecting her 3rd foal and so far there has been no reoccurence.

Surgical interference can sometimes cause sarcoids to respond aggressively so take care and get the best possible veterinary advice you can. And be ultra careful with flies on sarcoid sites as there is a suspected link between flies and sarcoids.
