Depends how hairy they get! I will probably keep clipping Olympic right throughout the year though because he will be working hard during the summer (and during last year parts of it were scorching!).
I thought you werent supposed to clip after Christmas cos you get their summer coat thats starting to come through? I havent done mine again because of this even though he is soooo hairy again!
You're not advised to do them after about the end of January...regardless of the weather...because the changing light levels stimulate summer coat growth. If you can imagine the pointed ends of the summer hairs growing through the skin...when you do too late a clip...you cut the pointy ends off, thus dulling the summer coat when it does come through.
Or so they say.

Yeah thats what I understood to be the case. I might clip at the end of Jan because when the warmer weather comes she has a tendancy to get more sweaty.
I have a welsh section B show hunter pony and last year we clipped her between christmas and new year as her last clip - a high trace clip - as I thought that by the time the first shows started she would have started to moult and the two would look "joined" Oh how wrong was I. I thought she looked OK until we got to the first show and the others in the class were all fully clipped out and non furry and when I look back at the photos she looks like an old iron grey moth eaten rug! Help please - This year I want to make her last clip a full clip - leaving legs on - but can anybody tell me when is the best time to do it please. We are only amateurs trying to compete and enjoy ourselves.
When I was showing P his last clip was in April I think??? From what I can remember his first WH was on the may bank holiday weekend and he was always just clipped out, tyhen when the summer came round he grew a fab shiney tight coat...
However as we were showing I always clipped out the legs?? Im not sure how it will work when trying to merge the unclipped legs and the rest of the coat so late....
thanks Loupride i have to leave the legs on as we also show her in m+m and you are supposed to leave feather - little as there is on a section B. First m+ m show is 12 April then show hunter pony show is first May Bank Holiday weekend so I may well do her at the end of February. Thanks
