*last minute panic* - what do I need to take with my boy to horsepital?

My boy is going to horsepital tomorrow for his knee.

What should I take with him?

  • Bridle (he is somewhat fresh at the moment after a months box rest!)
  • Headcollar and lead rope
  • Rug (he's clipped)
  • paper work including passport

Do I send:

  • Grooming kit?
  • Feed?
  • Supplements?

I just dropped nits off. The only thing they take is supplements at mine. Headcollars, feed and rugs are all provided and they'd rather not have yours as they then lose it! So I left her with nothing as she doesn't get any supplements. lol

Wouldn't worry at all about grooming kit, we've never taken feed before ours have often been taken in for colic if taken in tho, so not really an issue, unless is he very fussy or staying quite a while I wouldn't worry about feed. Everything else sounds fine, hope all goes well!
 
When mine went to Rossdales I took her thermatex (for after the anaesthetic), her headcollar and leadrope (they did keep it) and her passport. She gets blue chip lami light which is hardly a typical component of the average feed room so I bagged up a week's worth of that as well - no sense having her feed changed on top of everything else although they usually feed them.
They provided grooming kit and buckets and things but they said if I wanted to bring hers so it would smell normal I could. She's a sensible unworried type so I didn't.
Oh don't forget to sign your passport to say you're not going to eat your horse - I forgot to do that and I got a telling off at check-in.
 
I worked for a big horsepital in Newmarket.

They label everything. But I wouldnt send anything worth a lot of money just in case it gets lost. I wouldnt send a bridle. They will have bridle/chiffeneys there.

Dont send brushes they will have sets there. I would send what ever rug (if one at all) he has on of a night and maybe medium weight stable rug certainley for after surgery as he will be cold. Dont send feed or suppliments as they will be very unlikely to feed them it

He shuldnt be there that long hopefully so dont send everything! Hope he will be ok
 
Have a hug hunny.

We took:

Headcollar
Lead rope
Stable rug
Fleece rug (for inbetween sessions - there for a week of investigations)
Saddle and bridle - ridden as part of the investigations
Feed, for those on something different to 'normal' type chaff, etc.

Marked them all with name tags.

Different vets want different things, but should have sent a letter out telling you what you needed to take.

When my friends horse went to Rossdales. They didn't even have his headcollar as all the horses are lead in bridles/chifneys (precautionary) they provided feed/rugs, except for his Boett rug which obviously being specialist he had to take!
 
Have you checked whether they want his shoes removed? If they do, and they have to do it themselves, it may be more expensive than having your farrier take them off at home.
 
They will normally take them off themselves FOC.

When I took my boy in, I was asked to take everything home with me. They prefer to use their own stuff so there is no argument about things going missing.
 
It will be completely fine. He'll be back before you know it and they're really good at keeping you updated.
Once you get there the surgeon should explain everything to you again, that's what they did with me and it made me feel better. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery x

And don't worry about the shoes. If they want them off, they'll take them off. It'll be completely fine :)
